Well, it got here in a hurry and works like a charm. ran it on my daughters laptop while she was at school and rendered and put the files into Digital Performer and added the vocal. got excited and thought I'd share it with you. This is "Rain Is Such a Lonesome Sound" by Jimmy and Rachel Witherspoon. This was off some sheet music for the chords. Anyway hope you like it. Any comments are welcome.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for checking in with me. Yes the USB drive is great, I don't know how you got me all that great music and the drive to me for that very low price, but thank you. It's so convenient and easy to use, and the sounds are great. I can't wait to switch some of my old arrangements over to real tracks, and this is going to get me interested in writing more. This program is a giant leap forward in my estimation. Keep the Real Tracks coming!

Thanks Dave,

Careful you'll give me a big head. Actually I feel sort of guilty because it was so easy and I had so little to do. Of course, I was inspired by the talents of the recording artists on the Real Tracks. And I had been thinking about this song the past couple of days, so I was ready to give it a try. I had the chords and melody to this one in an old book, so it was a snap to type in the arrangement. Kinda reading the tutorial a bit as I went, but it's very similar to BIAB 12 for Mac. I think the one thing I realized was that I needed to adjust my singing a bit from the way it was written to make it fit with the music on the Real Tracks. This was the most of my time. Listening to the lines the instruments were playing and making it sound like a call and answer. I also think it was helpful to just have the basic tracks, because with the wealth of music at your fingertips with this program it would be easy to pile your plate to high.

Hi Mac,

Whoo! You liked it and my wife liked it. I feel like Jason and the Argonauts, I got past the rocks that always sink my ship. She's harder to please (musically speaking of course) than you. All the time I was recording I was thinking - No, that wasn't good enough, Mac won't buy that - try again. Well, I'm very happy to have my new tool and I was thinking if I can look at the tab on some of these players, I can learn a some new licks. I think the tutorial said that was available and the program that writes the arrangements from a sound file and the reharmonizer are on my list to explore. Hope you're having an enjoyable Spring, it's starting to get summery here.

Pete

I've been on vacation for a week or so - and this was the first I have checked in since I left. What a great sound. I don't play the blues much - but I surely enjoy listening to them.

Looking forward to more

Pete, I assume the harp tracks are real-tracks - is that right? Or is that you? Nice performance and arrangement one way or the other.

Question: If it's real-tracks - is there a way to suppress the auto-generate solo stuff while you are singing? That would give it some more 'real track' vibe, as if you are doing the vox and the harp in a live setting.

Hi Scott,

Yes, those were real tracks, BIAB supplied all the accompaniment. I don't know any way to do what you are suggesting, unless I played the harp myself - like Little Walter. Sometimes I do use a harmonica rack and Play guitar and harp together and sing too. I posted one like that before. Years ago I played with a harp player and he would do like in this song just play riffs and held notes all through the song. That was kinda the feeling I was trying to create - a small acoustic blues band. Of course, technically the harp is electric because it's being played through an amp. I was reading about the first time they recorded the harp through an amp at Chess records, in harp playing circles it was known as Independence Day. The player on this recording is able to get bends that sound like a jazz horn player. (And I apologize for not having his name handy) His control is amazing.

But I think you've got the right idea. Find creative ways to make the music come alive. One thing I found today is if I put a stereo reverb on a mono track it gives it more space in the mix, even with the reverb at a very low level. And recording a fader ride helps carve out space for a vocal. Just little touches that make it better. thanks for the nice comment and suggestions.

Pete, nice work. The ambience is very distinctive--first of its kind I've heard here, including the room acoustics instead of emulating a studio. Gives it an Alan Lomax kind of feel. A-1 job.

love those big rich vocals.

sounds to me that you have blended the vocal line in pretty well with the instruments, including the harmonica.

good job, Pete!

Hi Russ,

Hey, It's a long ole' road, but the beat goes on. This was a spur of the moment kind of thing, but I guess even some hit songs have been done that way. Hope all is swell in Cajun country and that the crawdads are tasty. I'm trying to get my hair(the remaining ones) to look like yours. Maybe we could form a team? Impersonate Johnny and Edgar?

Seriously thanks, and my best to you and your family.

Hello R.

Well thank you. You're more knowledgeable on the sound engineering than I am, but I've been doing this for quite a while. Anyway my thought today was I want to keep working in this pared down folk blues vein. That thought occurred after I spent today re-orchestrating some of my old sequences with the Real Tracks and came to the Dylanesque conclusion 'Don't Look Back'.

Alan Lomax going around the Delta with his tape recorder. looking for Robert Johnson and finding M.C.Kinley Morganfield aka Muddy Waters on the Stoval Plantation. That man made some historic recordings that will be around for a long, long time. Ran his recorder off a car battery. Maybe you could have heard something like what I did on the King Biscuit Time broadcast from Helena, Arkansas with Sonny Boy Willliamson II and Robert Lockwood Jr. live on the Radio.

I see you have a VG-88 , - I have the older model VG-8 and still like it for recording - One of the few older pieces that has held up over time.
