T.S. suggested i update my new install of win 7 to smooth out some roughness in audiophile 15. I had requested the tech turn off updates before I understood the implications.
Can anyone direct me to the correct place to enable win 7 updates. I tried control panel and device mgr. but don't know the proper names to look for or where to look. I'm ok about following instructions that I understand.

You likely are looking for the Service packs.... IIRC, there are several... (3?) or is that for XP? Look it up and download the service packs in their proper order.
MS isn't supporting those old OS's anymore so be sure to backup properly in the event of a malfunction, and save the SP's to a disk in case you need them in the future.

One one of my systems I'm still running Windows 7 Ultimate - it has all the updates and it is SP 1

if you can't find the short cut anywhere and asking/clicking the Win 7 "Help and support" shortcut you can run it directly:
find "Run" on your menu and then cut and paste this into the run "window" (without the quotes)
"C:\Windows\system32\wuapp.exe"
wuapp.exe is the Windows UPDATE application
Be aware that if this is a Fresh Win 7 install you will have a lot or required and critical updates and after it is all done and you've re-booted, run Windows Update AGAIN - sometimes some updates preclude others and you have to run it 2 3 times to get them all
I would SKIP ALL optional updates (expect HW driver explicit and you KNOW you'd like them) since those include about 6 or 7 that will lead you (BLINDLY) into the Windows 10's never ending nags
for sure SKIP these optional updates
kb3035583: This update installs the Get Windows 10 app, which helps users understand their Windows 10 upgrade options and device readiness.
kb2952664: This update helps Microsoft make improvements to the current operating system in order to ease the upgrade experience to the latest version of Windows
kb302191: performance tests to send to MS for UPDATE
EDIT fixed a few thing to make clearer (TBD I guess)

I have tried to view that link several times. I cannot follow it. It's as if it's running kinda fast or I'm running kinda slow. latter is most likely. NOT your fault and thank you for helping. I have to change the subject of my nest post because I have to find out if updates are enabled.
It's been looking for an update for 40 minute. I can get on line ok from my mac.

Windows 7 had a bout of Windows 7 Update itself being corrupted by a previous KB (aka knowledge base) update! I forget which ones (you can Google and uncover it) - I was bit twice once about two months ago, fist link seemed to fix it, then again in last few weeks and I had to do a little more drastic fix (last link) https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3102810and you can Google for: Win 7 updates slow or not working.... and similar =========== THIS LINK is when all else fails - I USED IT but it is not for the weak of heart! it will work if you FOLLOW all instructions and DO NOT PANIC at warnings like he says: "Don’t worry if some of the services report an error that they’re not running." https://askleo.com/fix-windows-update/you really want to download his .cmd files do not try typing that stuff in a DOS Command line yourself Good Luck Larry

Ron, Windows Update for Windows 7 Home Premium is available at: Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Update > Check For Updates. If you're having trouble using Windows Update, Microsoft has a small program that fixes many problems when running Windows Update. You download and then run the program ++ Click HERE for Windows Update Troubleshooter ++
