Hi, I haven't done enough testing to say for sure.
I know that my BIAB ver 12 Pro for Mac never locked up. It worked great. I'm keeping it safe in case BIAB 2009 doesn't work out!
My brand new BIAB 2009 for Mac, Everything Pak, was received on an External Hard Drive, installed to run from the Mac, but leaving the Real Drums and Real Tracks on the external drive.
The problem is when I play around with RealDrums, every song locks up, it will play nicely, but then no buttons work, the song keeps playing, and the only way to stop it is to quit BIAB.
My first Theory is that once I eject the External Hard Drive (and take away any possible use of RealDrums and RealTracks), that BIAB 2009 will run fine, i.e. that all the locking up on every song, where the buttons don't respond and the song keeps playing, comes from problems using the external hard drive.
I'll probably copy the RealDrums and Real Tracks to my hard drive, and test further, but I actually liked the idea of having them external.
How would I know if I need to use the additional power cord for the external drive? I'm not using it so far.
Thanks!
Wade Cottingham

You should try plugging in both ends of the Y cable, to get a constant amount of power to the hard drive. The program locking up would be a symptom of that, if the program is locking up on songs that access the external hard drive (RealDrums, RealTracks).

I had a similar problem with the external hard drive and windows. I couldn't find the Y cable at the time, but I had about 20 USB cables and I got the shortest fattest one and no longer needed the Y cable which I found a few days later and now resides in my computer cable storage box which is about the size of a steamer trunk.
I've no problems with the external hard drive, it's been hooked to my pc now for 6 months at least without problem.

Peter,
I tried the Y cable and so far, it seems to fix the problem.
Makes me wonder if an external power source for the external hard drive might be handier. I only have 3 USB ports total on the MacBook Pro, and I know that other model MacBooks only have two USB ports total.
Anyway Thank you very much!

Try what I mentioned. Of my 15 usb cables only 2 worked with the external hard drive. And the Y cable was ok too.
I have the windows version on an 80 meg external hard drive from PG music. It seems if the cable is short and thick it works better.
Maybe Mac should stick a meter on some cables and come to a conclusion. Now that Beta testing is done he should have about 3 or 4 extra minutes a day.

The USB power spec is 10 watts (5VDC at 2Amperes).
24AWG wire is indeed inside some of the cheaper made USB cables I've taken apart, but if truly 24AWG stranded copper wire, its ampacity rating is indeed 2 Amperes.
On the other hand, 22AWG is a bit larger diameter and can handle up to 7 Amps, while 20AWG can approach 11 Amps.
Those specs are for COPPER stranded wire.
There may be a situation where some of these cheaper import cables are not using good copper conductors, creating a situation where the wire itself has some undesirable higher resistance, have to look into that one with the meter as John says.

WOW! Thanks Mac. Just recently I installed a 650 WATT power supply. All the cables on it are thick wrapped. All top quality manufacturing. But, if I have the USB lines working sometimes it isn't enough to run without the Y cable.
