I need some suggestions for a decent mic to use with my ThinkPad, which is the computer I'm using BiaB on.
I would also like some advice about whether I need a mixer or additional hardware for my projects.
I'm happy with my setup for making accompaniment tracks for an ensemble that I play for. Playing the tracks from a CD is working well for us. However, I would like to have the group record their vocals on top of the tracks to use for creating practice CDs.
I'm totally clueless about what additional hardware I should get.

You probably need a mixer if you plan to add instruments to your BIAB song. I bought a small 6 channel mixer for $59.00 because I sometimes add an acoustic or an electric guitar to my music. I have a Shure SM-58. It is a good, rugged all around mic for under $100.00. There are many other good choices. Do you have Real Band? That is a good program for recording your vocals on, and mixing them.

Problem will be that a mixer or mic preamp will have Line level output.
Most laptops do not have a Line Level input on them, but some do these days.
Plugging the Line Level output into a Mic Level input on the laptop won't work right due to level and impedence mismatch, among other things.
An aftermarket sound device, like USB sound device, that can be hooked up to the laptop and used instead of the internal soundcard is the first item you should investigate and obtain. Many of them have Microphone Preamps and Mic connections built into them, saving you the cost of a mixer or mic preamp, also may be a bit easier to use in the long run.
A USB microphone by itself is another way to go. simple, one connection. Check out "Ball" USB mics, also Sampson makes economy varieties of these, there are others.
