I am looking for a new classical style guitar so I can do some picking without wrecking the old fingers. Move over "willie Nelson". Does anyone here know of a good bang for your buck type guitar that will play and sound well. I want something that will sound as close to a steel string acoustic as possible. It's just my fingers can't take the steel strings so much and I don't like finger picks. Should I buy one with the internal pickup or put my own on and if so which one should I use?

Ed, Godin makes their guitars in Quebec, and they do a splendid job. Pro-quality build, premium wood, innovative designs. Not too expensive to buy new, and ridiculously affordable if you can find a used one (re-sale value is still low because the name is not well-known). http://www.godinguitars.com/godinacsslimp.htm will get you something you can plug in... http://www.lasido.com/lapatriee.htm for a more traditional nylon string instrument, designed to be more accessible for a steel-string player. The regular and cut-away La Patrie guitars are also fine tools... but play the individual instrument before you buy it - they all sound (and feel) different. Once again: if you want to save some money but still own a guitar you can enjoy over the long haul, buy a quality used instrument.

Lots of people here using Godin. Must have some at Long and Mcquaid. I'm headed to T.O. tomorrow, stay with the son for 3 days, his g/f has gone to Cuba.
Probably will make the trip to the music store, not much that size here. And maybe the Bose store on Bloor.....
I did live at Bloor and Huron in the 60's...so they say........ha ha.

Godin are awesome axes.
For the BIAB/RB/PT user, consider getting a Godin nylon string (I really still want to call 'em Gut Strings) that also has the MIDI pickup and output on it and you will have one great sounding, easy playing and very useful instrument.

Funny you should say that Mac. I was looking at a Yamaha today. Great sound and great price. But I will check out those others mentioned too.

You want a classical that sounds like a steel string?
That might be a tall order. You might have to go the MIDI pickup route (which on a nylon string guitar might be an even taller order) and then do some kind of simulation/sample playback setup.
Now, if you just want to groove on a reasonably priced classical, I can heartily recommend the model I bought about a year and a half ago from Rondomusic.com
The one I bought was a solid cedar top with a Shadow P7 pickup built in. I don't see they are currently carrying them. Contact Kurt at Rondo to find out if they will carry them again.
I paid $150 for mine. It sings nicely for a classical - a little on the heavy side for a classical. But it does not sound like a steel string guitar.

Use yer fangers and Cowboy Up!
I was playing a Fender Sonoran today. What a great little guitar. It has a fender neck and it plays a little easier than my other flat tops. Use some extra light strings at first and let your nails grow out on your right hand (that's the secret) and play an hour a night and in a week you won't care. If yer hands are girly (LOL) you can try a rubbing alchohol soak (don't drink it!) or a BetaDyne soak (iodine & soap (so it won't stain yer fingers)). There are other recipes on the intertubes but I don't use the soak methods. Actually, growing out yer nails will limit the pain to just about zilch.
I play without picks for fingerstyle (Clapton does too) and although I can use a thumb pick and steel banjo picks (yes they are clumbsy) I enjoy the "feel" of working the strings.
Anyway just a suggestion.

There is an Alverez Model, not sure if This is it? but when I play gigs in an area of the state near a Guitar Center I usually stop in to kill sometime and gravitate right to the rack, which holds this guitar. I know I will buy it in the not to distant future as it has a smaller neck than the usual classical fatter neck guitars, therefore it not only sounds good (I have not tried it through an amp or mic'd yet) but it feels good and is easy to play. Good Luck,
