Have been away from the forum for quite a while, but not twiddling my thumbs! The school I work at in Berlin did a project connected with the Airlift for the 60th anniversary. My part was recording a CD with kids, "Flying with the Chocolate Pilot". One song is in honor of the children's hero of the Airlift, the then 27-year-old pilot Gail Halvorsen, who came up with the idea of dropping chocolate and gum from the air on the way to land his cargo at Tempelhof Airfield. He kindly participated with a recording made while he was touring several states (at the age of 87), speaking at schools and libraries and even doing candy drops (he is still a licensed pilot). The kids got really inspired by the theme of caring and sharing. CD sales have raised over $3000 for CARE/Germany's Airlift Memorial Project, a new school in Nepal. Our best audience were the veterans and their families, the choir is led by the amazing Col. I don't know if I'll ever do anything like this again, it was an incredible amount of work, even with some energetic parents arranging for performance opportunities and promotion. But I do want to go on with the choir that was formed through this project.

He is a legend among flyboys, young and old alike.
One man can choose to go the extra distance and make a huge difference...
