Watch that youtube video for information about the problem I'm having.

Thanks!

Hello Benny,

Thanks. But as I've said, you just need to Add a new external device in your CoreMIDI dialog and connect a virtual MIDI cable. If you've already done that, you haven't indicated that anywhere that I've seen.

Hey Benny,

I saw your video on Youtube. Make sure you have Aria configured correctly. In other words, midi IN and Out must be checked. Doesn't make sense to me, but that is the way they want it set up.

Also, Do you have Garageband, Logic, or another midi program? If so, test it there, if you are getting signal, you know it is still a BIAB issue. I still can't get my EWI to work in BIAB, but I can get it to work in Logic, Garageband, and Sibelius.

Totally stumped on this one, hope you can get it working!

Hello Ed,

Can you describe how you have your CoreMIDI window set up? You should have a picture of your interface connected to an 'external device' with a virtual MIDI cable (you set it up this way, even though the actual hardware MIDI interface is built into the synth).

OK, I setup my EWI with an external device. Still doesn't work. I'm not sure I did it right, but what I did was connect my EWI, then I click on add a new device, then connected my EWI to that new device. That new device, nor the EWI show up in BIAB. BTW, EWI works great in logic and in garage band.

Great, so you should have a picture of your EWI, and an external device, with a cable going from the OUT on the external device to the IN on the EWI. If Band-in-a-Box was open when you did this, close BB and re-open it. Next, go to MIDI menu | Choose Ports, and select the input in the MIDI IN drop-down.

Hopefully you'll see it listed there. If not, close BB and go back to the CoreMIDI Setup window. Press the 'Test Setup' button. Send some MIDI data from your controller and see if there is any activity in the CoreMIDI window, or a beep.

Nope. Doesn't work. I don't see my new device, nor the EWI listed. In the audio setup window, I see:
1. IAC Driver
2. Network
3. EWI-USB
4. New External Device

There is ONE cable going from the "New External Device" "out" to the "IN" on the EWI. I've quit, restarted, relaunched BIAB and I go to MIDI, Choose ports, and same deal. My choices for MIDI in are Bus 1, and a blank line.

Weird, no?

I still can't play melodies into BIAB via my EWI. Sad.

I should have said that I don't see my EWI nor the new device listed in BIAB.

Ok - thanks for trying that. Is there any activity when you press the Test Setup button in the CoreAudio window, and play your synth?

Yes. I get beeps when I blow into the EWI. The EWI works perfectly with Logic, Garageband and even Finale 2009. It's BIAB that seems to be having the problem.

Anything else you want me to try?

Is the EWI-USB issue any better in BIAB 2010 for Mac?

This issue was discussed some time ago, either here or at the Patchman forum. I think it was determined that BIAB and Aria couldn't use the same sound card at the same time. Later, Ray

Hey man... got the EWI up and running for 2010. Totally works now! However, one weird thing... then I open up the dialog to choose the midi in port, there is now a blank line. If I choose that blank line, the EWI works.
Anyways, I'm having fun with 2010. One feature I still don't see though, is a display somewhere that shows me what chorus I'm on. I KNOW I can get that in the notation window, but I want it in the chord view window instead!

Hi Benny. Can you give us a step-by-step of how you got BIAB and the EWI to work together? Later, Ray

Yeah man. . I uaed BIAB 2010. In "Audio MIDI Setup" I created a new external midi device. I don't know why I did this, but Andrew, the support dude told me to. I then connect the ins and outs from my EWI USB that that new external device, which I named "virtual EWI." THEN, inside BIAB, I Choose MiDI Ports, and I get this weird blank line. I choose that weird blank line, then close everything and it work!

It's that easy! ha.

I'll see about figuring out how to get more name information from the available MIDI ports.

The CoreMIDI is similar to the old Opcode OMS scheme, which might not be much of a surprise because Doug Wyatt, the man who wrote OMS, has worked for Apple now many years, and I presume he may have written a great deal of the CoreMIDI stuff.

It has layers of device records, and ways of interrogating the layers of devices' properties, names and other info. MacBB is probably not searching deep enough into that stack looking for names.
