Hi All, I'm looking for a reasonably priced (no more than $200) solution to two problems... I need to connect my Roland PC-180A MIDI keyboard to my laptop, and I would like to find a way of connecting my sound output to my home stereo. Currently I use the headphone jack plug but would like to use USB if possible. Is there a simple, one box, solution to this problem? Many thanks in advance Mark

Educate yourself thoroughly before spending a dime. (You did good by asking here first.) What will you do with your interface now? Record your voice and guitar? What might you want to do with it later? Record a band in 16 channels? The more you know about yourself and how you work, the better the selection you will make. It will save you time, money, and aggravation/remorse in the future. The TASCAM US-122 is a popular choice here. The new TASCAM US-144 adds S/PDIF to its audio/MIDI I/O capability. The 122 goes for $129 at Musician's Friend, the 144 for $149. Look also for offerings from M-Audio, starting with the Audiophile 2496 at $99. And keep asking questions. R.

Thanks very much for your advice, Ryszard... BIAB and RealBand are my rehearsal tool at the moment. I need to use the PC-180 to play/write in the notes into Sibelius and I would like to improve the sound quality of my output... I've used the headphone jack for some time now but don't believe I'm getting the best out of all my wonderful Real Tracks. I don't need any complicated mixing desks... my desk/music workstation is getting to look like a spiders web of wires and boxes so to find a solution in one box will suit me. I'll take a look at both the TASCAM and the Audiophile. Thanks, once again for your advice. mfs

AP 2496 is not for laptop, being a PCI card.
There are lots of USB options that include both Audio and MIDI capabilities in one unit, I would recommend the M-Audio Fast Track Pro as one that I personally know has performed well with pgmusic products on a friend of mine's Toshiba laptop. There were a few shakedown bugs to iron out, a few tweaks, but after that, everything has been up and running fine for well over half a year for him.

DOH! And nor will he be recording guitar . . . I never said I was perfect, just teachable. Eventually.
Srsly, my experience with my TASCAM I/O has been superb, too, as has that of numerous others who have reported here. I've had and used it since 2005 with nary a glitch.

I'm using the Edirol UA-4fx made by Roland but I haven't tried it with a keyboard. It works well with my laptop, Ketron SD2, and Roland monitor cube. It's about the size of a paperback book. FWIW

Don't know if you can find an old one on ebay but I have a Creative Soundblaster USB mp3+, USB one end, rca's white and red both in and out, no drivers necessary for either XP or Vista 64, also has optical in and out. I paid about 40 bucks for the thing new a few years back, works fine.
