Hello all. I am a new user who has the external HD with UltraPaK. No problems with my desktop PC, plenty of USB ports. When I bring the HD home at night, I have a laptop with 1 open USB port. I would like to add a Glyph Portagig 500GB HD with its 1 USB port connection and transfer the entire UltraPak there. Would this just be a copy & past operation? What is the best way to go about transfering from the PG hard drive to the new one? I want to do away with the supplied USB Y chord that needs two ports.  Thanks for any help.

Assuming a Windows OS, just hook the two up to the desktop at the same time and copy the entire contents of one to the other. You can do that by choosing "Select All" in the explorer window for the original drive, then select Copy, both from the Edit menu, then open the explorer window for the new drive and choose Paste.
Best to do it when you have time to wait on the copy process, like at night when you aren't trying to use the computer to do other tasks. This method will help assure that no large files get interrupted during the copy by other tasks going on...

In case this helps overcome your objection to using two USB ports, you can use just one and plug the other side of the Y cable into a powered USB hub.
Note that I first ran this by Tech Support to make sure they had no objection. It was the only way I could get sufficient USB power for my hard drive, since I had other USB devices connected as well.

I had trouble with the Y chord setup for whatever reason. I ended up getting an Iomega 500gb ext. hd. Per Peter's suggestion, I put the BIAB and Real Drum files on my laptop and the Real Tracks and real track demos on the hd. I just have to remember to turn on the ext hd (has its own power source) when I load BIAB. The laptop won't boot up if the ext hd is on. No problems with this setup so far--around 6 months. fWIW

I have also been running my audiophile version of BIAB from the external USB drive. I encountered the issue that my USB ports don't supply enough juice to power the drive (even using the Y cable) and so I have adopted the solution described by Matt of using a powered USB hub. This has been running fine for several months now.
I am, however, thinking about installing a bigger internal drive within my audio PC and transferring BIAB from the USB drive on to this new internal drive. This is partly to get rid of the desktop clutter of the external drive and powered USB hub but also partly because I think it will speed up the performance of BIAB if I am running it from an internal 7200 rpm drive rather than the external 4200 rpm drive.
I would be particularly interested if any other users have moved from the USB drive to an internal drive and what sort of performance boost (if any) that they have experienced. I am thinking primarily of the time it takes to generate Realtracks. I think that the disk speed is a limiting factor in the performance of this process but I could be wrong.

My problem with the Y cable was I misplaced it. Then I went through the 10 or so usb cables I have in my cable storage unit. Found out that some have nice thick wire, and the portable drive works fine with them, and others are no good at all. Then my daughter found the Y cable, but I did not need it any more, besides who wants to run two cables.
I have used it every day since I got it last year, and I move between my HP desktop monster thing with the keyboard downstairs, and the acer aspire I have upstairs, when I play the accoustic piano.
Never had a moments problem with it, but I did back it up to an external hard drive I keep to move files and save stuff I worry about.

I use a utility like Burstcopy for large transfers. XP is not too bad, but Vista seems to really have trouble with large quantities and large files. I had also had bad luck with the "Y" cables so I just keep the one that shipped with BIAB as my "archival backup" and run BIAB off a nice Seagate.

Hello. Thanks to all who weighed-in with suggestions. Like PhillyJazz, I to would like to end up with the company HD as my reserve back-up. To offer suggestions about external HDs. Web search "Glyph" drives, the PortaGig 800 is actually a Seagate 7200 rpm, f/w800 or 400 or USB 2.0 . It is made for music so it includes the Oxford chip for great operation. I run 12-16 MIDI tracks and 4-8 audio tracks via USB with no problems, but it is rated for a much higher capacity. Very small and comes with external power supply. I will give copy & paste a try (at night). Then I re-set BIAB & RB to the new drive location. I am guessing that PG is OK with owners making 2 copies, one for each computer. I am still running XP pro SP2 on both, I hear to many bad things about Vista. I have much to learn, but BIAB has helped me take my music to another level. A big thumbs up!

I never really read the licensing agreement in detail, but my assumption is that most "fair" software companies allow you to use their software "like a book." Just as two people cannot read the same book in different locations, it SHOULD be OK to run it any SINGLE computer at any GIVEN TIME (but not more than once simultaneously.) PG -Please correct me if I'm wrong.
The Glyph drives are a huge value-add if you are serious producer of music, and are willing to pay for the guarantee of performance (as well as overnight replacement, and data restoration !!)
Any audio I edit tend to be on my desktop local 10KRPM drives (and I do have a 30GB SSD if I need it ..) If I were to put together a portable DAW a Glyph is probably 2X a lesser drive byte-for-byte, however worth the investment.

Hello Jan. That is the way I'm using the Glyph I have now. ThinkPad t400 laptop with
internal 7200rpm as system drive, and external Glyph, via USB, for audio files. Its my home system, but I like it more than my quad processor desktop PC. I would add a second Glyph 500GB for BIAB & RB. I think the supplied HD is a slower speed, made-in-china model.
I have been reading about 10K rpm & SSD replacements. Once they get the capacity up on the SSDs I'm in. What has your experience been? Easy set-up and stable operation? Thanks for the feedback!

The only speed or track count advantage you will have with any USB drive that is higher rpm would be the loading time of RealTracks *might* be a little faster.
Track count doesn't matter for audio files stored on the USB drive at all because the host program will load the files onto the Temp directory on the C drive anyway for streaming.

My SSD drive is tiny, 2.5 inch form factor (I will have to one day buy an adapter) but it uses the same power/signal connections as any SATA drive. For now, it is just resting loose in my desktop (which doesn't move much.)
I had trouble getting Windows XP to boot from it, and gave up. I mostly now use it to host Virtual Box/VMWAre VMs, and it is VERY quick at that. When doing software tests, I often snapshot an image, screw it up, and then revert to the snapshot. It's been about three months now with no issues. I'm sure they are standard equipment in Netbooks these days.
