I was going to add this to the wish list but thought I'd check here first to see if there is a remedy now in BIAB. Sometimes a melody is dancing around the fifth of the chord - perhaps it is the fifth or the flatted fifth or sharped fifth. When I am playing the keyboard, I would usually play the shell of the chord (root, third, seventh) in the left hand and let the melody manage the fifth, in whatever variation. Trying to play the fifth in the left hand generally just gets in the way so the shell approach is a clean way to mange the situation.

In BIAB, the best I can do is enter the chord variation (like C7, C7+, C7b5) but it usually doesn't work well due to timing, and it forces the BIAB style to break its pattern. So, I'd like to to have a BIAB chord I would call (for, say, C) C7X5 or C9X5, indicating that the BIAB style should not play the fifth.

Is there a way to do that now?

What you are seeking is actually in the patterns inside the Style file.

For example, the Garner styles do indeed have the shell and tritone LH he ws famous for in them.

I agree that we could use more styles that have the shell patterns in them, though.

Because manually editing the style files to suit is a chore.

What Mac said. Other than that -> more chords would be a boon. Some distinction between Dim and Dim7 would be good for a starter. Don't think this one could be shoved off to the patterns.

One quick way of eliminating 5ths from the piano/guitar/strings part of a style is to use the 'VELOCITY adjust by this much (all patterns)' option under the 'Pattern' menu

Make sure that you tick 'when adjusting velocities, use a single note only'.
This allows you to home in on the G (5th) residing usually on the 4th or 5th octaves. (Midi notes 55, 67)
Reduce them by 90 and the 5th effectively disappears from your chordal part.

After that simply save the style under another name in case you need to keep the original.

Alan

(P.S. Using this quick global deletion method for any or all of the chord tones except the root, opens up endless possibilities for chord voicing by using the melody harmony to harmonize the roots. I'll go into this more fully in the tips and tricks section.)

Good call - yet likely won't work with those ubiquitous macro notes ...

Yes thanks for reminding me. This is the only drawback. Any workaround for that would surely be too arduous and not worth the bother.

What you could do though is make a standard midi file of a track with a simple C7 running all the way through....and make a new style from it by reimporting to the Style Wizard. Choose the ' more' setting and under the 'Substyles and Voicings section' select the piano voicing option for 'tritones only (3rd and 7th). This should work every time.

Thanks for all the feedback. At best, sound arduous to use alan's word. Of course, this notion would be best if it functioned for all styles, and it would usually be the case that this would be only needed hear and there - so a C9X5 would be desired in one place in a song, and a C9 would be desired in other places of the same song.

This is sort of similar to the "5" chord which I think plays root and 5th, no third (although in looking at one style, anyway, the third was played as well ???). This would be like CX3 in this context.

And that is what I mean by saying that the Style File often controls the note selection.

The "Power Chord" of X5 works as a root-fifth with no third in styles that have been designed to be used with it, such as the metal, rock, etc. styles. And even some of those will put the third in there.

This may be the problem that would prevent doing things the way you ask, although I have no idea what's actually "under the hood" inside BIAB, I'm just relaying what I have found out through "dealing with it" over the years.

Hi Kelso

Its not so hard to adopt my second suggestion ...export a midi and reimport it to the Style Wizard.... IMO. As i said, this method should work for every style. There you can choose the shell voicing before making your new style. Takes about 1 minutes work in total. I would use that approach myself now. Save the style as something similar to the original and simply switch to that one at those bars where you want no 5th in the left hand.

HTH
