The forum seems rather slow lately, so I'll ask again if a few of you might have the time to review my version of "I Left My Heart In San Francisco".

I've decided to put together a collection of tunes for my Father-In-Law's birthday coming up in October. This is the first of however many I can get done before the big day. It's an arrangement of "I Left My Heart In San Francisco". If you have a few minutes, please give it a listen and advise me of any changes that you think would benefit the song. Mostly I'm looking at levels, compression, reverb, that sort of thing, but any other glaring issues may still be able to be corrected before I get any further into it.

Hi toucher,
I don't have the technical knowledge to tell you how to "mix" the mix, but I can hear that you are too far ahead in the mix. Perhaps you could use some slapback echo on your voice and reduce ever so slightly the volume, see how the mix goes from there. I would also increase the drums slightly (but by reducing your voice that may take care of that) just trying to help.

Thanks George, thats the kind of info I'm looking for. I will make a few adjustments later today and repost the song. I want it to sound like a raw jazz club combo, not to over processed, but clear and definable. I kinda figured the vocal was to far out front, but I don't have good monitors, just working with some little KLH bookshelf speakers as I always have, so critical evaluations are not always best done here at home.

You might want to reconsider the two total stops in the piano-intro; it seems to my ears that they should ring out (never have heard the song before though)
Just a tad verb on the vocal and the sax and bring the vox down just a tiny, tiny bit.
Very good performance, great job!

Thanks Mike, I combined a midi piano part with a converted audio part, so I think I can still manipulate the midi piano to let it ring a bit and see how it sounds. Might work out well. I'll try the more reverb on the vox, but my wife gives ge hell for too much reverb on almost every vocal I do, which isn't too many.

Overall I really like the arrangement. The sax sounds about right to me. I realize that you want a slow intro because you increase the tempo at the main chorus, but it's too slow for my taste; It seems to drag. The voice is slightly too loud when the sax is playing, I realize that it's the lead but it seems to over power the sax a little too much, again for my taste. It's refreshing to hear the sung notes held as compared to most of the leading pop singers of today. I really like the sax tone, too. Please realize that I'm an amateur musician so my comments may not be at a very high level.
