This may sound like a stupid question, but how can I simulate a capo in BiaB? I have a song that is chorded 6 frets up from the nut and I'm not sure how to enter the chords for that. Any ideas?

What are the open chord patterns that you are playing with the capo?

For example, are you playing what would be the pattern for an open G, C or D?

What ar the chords for the progression? If you don't know, then list the chords as if you were playing at the nut without the capo, by the names they would have "down there".

If you are just looking for the key to come out right, punch the chords in (shape wise, i.e. if you play a C shape with the capo, enter a C) as if at the nut, then transpose up 6 semitones to get the key to match. If you are trying to get the Guitar fretboard in BIAB to display correctly you will have to go the routes as noted above.
Apologies if this is too far off base of what you want and/or a bit too simple but I don't know what level of BIAB experience you have.
Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. I'm hoping to avoid style editing if possible.

To Mac's question, yeah, I'm actually looking at moving D, C and G up 6 frets. I'm just not sure if it's possible in BiaB or how I would enter the chord if it is.

BarryK: while I do understand the principles of transposing up by semitones, I'm still learning this (I'm a very basic strummer is all) and don't understand HOW-- especially in BiaB. Sorry if I didn't make the extent of my ignorance clear.

I'm working in Chord view and just want to type in the capo'ed chords... is that even possible?

EDIT: I should have also said I'm trying to figure out how to transpose chords up the neck without a capo as well... like moving G up a few frets (no capo) and then determining the resulting chord. I have tried some online "chord finder" tools but most produce chord IDs that Biab will not accept... like Gsus4/E.,

No further advice? Not even pointers to books on the subject? No one has done this before in Biab?

I am coming really empty on trying to learn... : /

Open D chord pattern with capo at the 6th fret would sound as an Ab.

C would be a Gb.

And G would be a Db.

If you start out with BIAB in the key of G, then entered the chords as D, C and G in the right bars, after that just go to the keysignature dropdown box and change the key signature to Db to have it sound the same key as your guitar is playing when the Capo is on the 6th fret.

And keep studying, music is not something that can be learned overnight. Take it a little at a time. Consider paying a music teacher, too.

BTW -- I don't know how I missed your question for so long, I don't think the post was visible at my end until just now...

Thanks Mac.

I'm trying to find resources that teach the mechanics (like how you arrived at your answer) but so far have not found anything helpful. Most of what I've run across makes too many assumtions about the reader's background thus far. An instructor is currently out of the question but I'm open to books for sure.

I have "Complete Idiot's Guide to Music Composition" and it's been a huge help, but I still need to find something oriented around the guitar fretboard for now.

1. Memorize the Chromatic Scale. C, C#, D, D# E, F, F#,G,G#, A, A#, B, C and going downward in this drill, make the sharps the flats for the note above instead, like this, C,B,Bb,A,Ab,G,Gb,F,E,Eb,D,Db,C. Note that there is no E# needed, nor an Fb, same note.

2. The frets on your guitar represent a half step for each fret.

So if the high pitched E string is at E on the nut, it would be an F at the first fret, an F# at the second, and so on.

HTH,

If the song is 6 frets up the neck, then it is, for example, in Bb (instead of E with no capo).
So let's assume that it is in Bb.
1. You could type in the chords in Bb, then transpose the song to E (which is the key with no capo).
2. Then turn on the guitar Tutor, with a Folk Guitar - Simple setting. You will now see guitar chords playing which would be correct for the key of E, or key of Bb with a capo up 6 frets.
3. You can copy these chords to the melody for a permanent copy from the guitar tutor.

If you would also chord diagrams on the notation, press Notation-Options Chord Diagrams-Folk. And if you want to see the chords in the capo'd key, you can set a transpose value of 6, which corresponds to the capo key.

Have Fun!
