Out of curiosity, I just checked and found 546 friends in my Facebook friend list. That may be wonderful, but I don't know 99-44/100% of them, I've never even heard of them!
How do I delete them short of deleting my FB account?

Don, you have to blow them away one at a time, I think. What kind of computer and browser are you using? On my Facebook profile page, I just click on Friends and I see them all, shown alphabetically one at a time. I can click on the Friend box with each name and Unfriend them, but again, I think it has to be done one at a time.

If you close the account, then you will have to re-friend all your valid friends.
Facebook does not have a means to automatically accept friend requests, so either you or someone who might have access to your account would have had to accept the requests in the first place.
I would just scroll the list and decide who I wanted to keep, and then just unfriended everyone else. If a few happen in error, and they really are friends, they can request that you friend them again.

I keep mine at exactly 20. I am not going to let Facebook become a full time job. And before anybody tells me that I can turn off their feed, then why bother having them as friends? I know all 20 of them in real life. I keep nobody around who doesn't actually interact with me. If someone wants an add and I decide to grant it, if they don't send a PM in a month, they are gone.
Also be aware that a lot of the Asian users in particular do a "follow". I monitor that as well.
Go to security, blocked, and search for following me. You will be shocked. Then do the same for facebook security. Delete them all!
