I've had Realband on my computer for a long time and decided I would try it out by opening a BB number in my Realband program using my theme song. It starts out with my doing a vocal over Glen Miller harmony playing long tones. I then talk for half a chorus using Singers Unlimited long tones. The last half of the chorus is in an improv using a vib harmony. The last chorus uses a supersax harmony backing up my muted trombone and then ends with my doing a vocal with some kind of backgound harmony. Am I right in thinking that none of these background harmonies are possible in Realband? Why would I give all of this up? What would be a Realband substitute for these background harmonies?

Hi Richard,

RealBand does not contain the BIAB MIDI Harmonies engine, but you can still get it to play your song correctly.

The way to get the harmony parts inside of RealBand is to not simply open a BB songfile in Realband, but to first go back to BIAB and export the song as a MIDI file. If you also have RealTracks, be sure to check that box off, too.

Inside BIAB, with your song open and generated, choose File -> Make a Standard MIDI File.

In the next window, hit the Options button.

To get the harmonies into RealBand, be sure to check off, "Write Harmony to MIDI file" there.

Right below that is another checkbox I like to use, ""MIDI file harmony on separate tracks" -- this one will place each line of your Harmony part on a separate track in the MIDI file, which means that you can then adjust things like Pan, Volume, etc. for each Harmony part once the file is opened up in RealBand. You could also add Effects, either to just one track or any. Powerful.

After creating a MIDI file of your BIAB songfile, you can open that up easily inside RealBand and you should be ready to go!

Realband is not Band in a Box. Don't expect to find all the familiar Band in a Box stuff there. Realband represents a way to move BIAB songs to a multitrack sequencing software that also recognizes things like the style files, chord grid and stuff, but doesn't have all the auto-accompaniment features that BIAB does. Meant to work together IMO, rather than one being a replacement for the other or anything like that.

Thanks much, Mac. It looks like work but it sounds like it might be worth it.
