Glad to hear the songs are doing well, and even more so that you are happy with your CD.
I think THAT is a big goal in itself. If we could be happy with our end results, there is a great amount of satisfaction in that.

To me the issue is not whether it is a home studio or not, but rather two things the setup and the skills needed to master the songs.
As far as setup what i mean is the space used. So many home recording folks use a small side bedroom or such to record in there is little or no sound treatment, and a ton of background noise. If you had a nice basement, or some kind or room that you could really setup them it could be very different. Take a solid custom build DAW workstation, place it in a cabinet where no fan noise leaks out use a better than sound blaster interface, and a few assorted devices like a decent preamp, reverb, compressor. A good set of mikes and you get a nice recording, add a well designed room with proper bass traps, and accoustic treatment, and the sound quality go way up. Add in a experienced master engineer and you have a very high end product.
The end result is that the quality of the home recording depends on the quality of the home studio and the man polishing it up.

With most consumers listening to music in mp3 format with cheap earbuds, I doubt whether it matters if we use a $30,000 compressor or a $200 one. The audio quality coming out of the playback device is still going to be crappy. Look at the rampant abuse of pitch correction plug-ins. Every time I go into a department store where they're playing background music with vocals, I can hear blatant examples of heavy-handed pitch correction on the vocals. Another abuse of the equipment is the way the audio is squashed down to within an inch of its life, so that there's about 2 db of dynamic range. Whether these abuses are accomplished in a million-dollar studio or somebody's bedroom using KillerDAW, the results to the consumer are about the same, given a recording engineer/producer with reasonable ears and technical acumen.
I agree with the previous posters who say that it's more about the musical and emotional content of the song; not the technical aspects. Well, if I had to guess, I'd say that the song is 80% of it, and the technical aspects of the recording are 20%.

Allies (80's Christian Band) recorded one of their albums in a garage here in Southern California. I can't recall if they won any awards with it, but it IS one of their best to date. Bob Carlisle & Randy Thomas (Butterfly Kisses) were in the band.
I guess it helped that Bob Carlisle has a Master's Degree in Music.
