Hi folks
A friend of mine has a load of files she needs to get to me - about 2.5GB in all. She is in Frankfurt. I am in Vienna. How can she do this and where? What's the best thing to do?

Depending on your friend's ISP she may take advantage of included services such as a gmx mediacenter, 1&1 smartdrive or similar services. A standard package comes with about 10 GB of free online storage space. This type of free online storage may be operated similar to s.th. like a public folder.

Sam, each of you should download and install the German freeware version of Team Viewer. Microsoft recommended it when their Tech Support couldn't get Remote Desktop running on my father's PC. I used it to make some adjustments on his machine (I'm in Atlanta, he's near Washington, DC). I have also used it to transfer a DVD's worth of files between my home machine and my laptop when I was at a friend's house. As far as I know there is no file size limit, you don't have to sign up for anything (you may register if you like), and you can use it for other things as well. R.

Why not copy the data to a DVD and mail it to you? You didn't say how quickly you needed it.
That way, you don't have to worry about corrupted downloads or overusing allocated bandwidth or etc. And then, when you receive it, you have an automatic backup of the files.

I like Team Viewer, actually more than one person can be included. However, I tend to agree with John, UPLOAD speeds are never near what download speeds are. With a 3Mb/s upload speed (go to Speedtest.net) it will take you 3 seconds to upload each megabyte. So, in an IDEAL situation, you're talking about a 2.5 to 3 hour upload on your friends part.

Yeah, never underestimate the bandwidth of a car full of floppy disks meandering up the expressway at 100 km/h.

Sam, there are also services such as Rapid-Share or the like. But I agree, the upload times are horrible compared to the download times. So she will upload hours.
Let her meil it by good ole postal sercvice.
@ Lawrie: The highways in Austria are 130 km/h and in Germany there is no speed limit!

G'day Sandra, yeah...  here in Oz the powers that be have decided it's easier to keep lowering our speed limits than fixing our roads. The highest speed limit you'll find here is 110 km/h - very frustrating. I HATE "do-gooders" that insist they know what's good for me better than I do - especially when I'm pretty sure my IQ exceeds theirs by at least 100 points (that only needs me to have an IQ of 101 by the way...  ) I recently did a "quicky" 1400 km round trip into country New South Wales - my car has a 5.7 litre V8 (350 Chevy in a Holden SS Commodore) and 6 speed manual gearbox, fun to drive, and believe me the limits were very frustrating. The vehicle is well able to travel much faster than 110 safely. Did the return 700 k's in 7 1/2 hours for 66 litres of fuel and without exceeding the speed limit - was pretty pleased but would have happily spent a little more on fuel to be able to travel at 140 plus. If I had a car full of disks instead of people that would have been some amazing bandwidth

It`s funny for a Yurop like me how fantastic a manual gearbox to you guys is. We only have manual 5-6 speed gearboxes in Austria, if you drive an Automatic car, you are a loser here in Austria
I personally think an Automatic car is more comfortable to handle. I sometimes get cramps in my hand (due to guitar overplaying also) when switching gears very often in the city. So maybe our next car will be an Automatic version. Damn thing is, if you`re not used to it, you step hard on the breaks evry time you want to step the gear pedal  , and it drives slow on the mountains here in Austria, dunno why, the automatics are switching gears in a strange way on mountains (and we have plenty of mountains here).
For the speed limit. Hmm some drivers really overdo it here and in germany. No matter how safe the car is, the human being is still a big factor. I think 130 km/h is enough.

Personally, I reckon all the automagic doodads contribute to our road toll. Body goes to sleep 'cos it has nothing to do, then "wham", an emergency occurs and you can't react fast enough 'cos the body won't respond... The vast majority of our population lives in cities - take NSW - around 6 million people - 5 million live in Sydney, another 1/2 million plus live in 2 or 3 major centres - automatics are popular. Small cars are usually manuals, but large cars are auto's. A manual is a special order...

....and it is possible to drive a relatively short distance and encounter 8 different speed limits - 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100 & 110 km/h.
No wonder people are always getting booked!!!!
