In BIAB when it reports that a chord is a sus chord - is that sus4 or sus2? and can you specify the other?

Hi Beagle,
sus = sus4. If you were after a sus2 chord, you'd enter that as either "2", "sus2", or "add9".
In other words, Csus = Csus4
And C2 = Cadd9 = Csus2

You can write X2 or Xadd9 (which will turn into X2).
On a cell, do a Right-Click and select Chord Builder. You will see all the supported chord types, and you can audition them to find the sound you want.

Doesn't Csus2 mean add in 2 (D), but drop the 3 (E) = C, D, G
doesn't C2 = C,D,E,G ?
doesn't cadd9 = C,E,G,D ?

Hi Kevin. Yes, your chord spelling is correct.
C2 and Cadd9 are just different inversions of the same chord tones.
Agreed, Csus2 is different. There is a sometimes a difference between what a chord says and the way BIAB interprets it. I assume Noel's statement was talking about the way BIAB interprets it. He meant that if you type C2 or Csus2 or Cadd9 in BIAB, it will convert if necessary and all three will display and play as C2.
Another example of this is Cdim and Cdim7. Both appear as Cdim (but, interestingly, play as Cdim7).
If you would like to see exactly how this is working in BIAB, go to your \BB folder and use Notepad to view a file called pgshortc.txt which references shortcut.txt and you'll understand.

Be careful, many of the Styles determine what gets played on a given chord and that leads people to make blanket statements about it all.
For example, a jazz piano in a style is likely to add notes to a chord just as a live jazz pianist might, things like that. Then there are inversions, whether or not the Style is programmed to use open or closed voicings, things like that to consider as well.
If you want exact note stacks, that is really a job for the static sequencing software.

well and really that's what I do anyway. I always export what MIDI I want from BIAB to Sonar and use it there, so I can always manipulate the chords in the static PRV of each MIDI track anyway.

Hi Beagle:
In using "sus 2 or sus 4" chords . . . always remember the command /* (star meaning what note you chose for the BASS NOTE). Keep experimenting! Go ahead and chose different notes from the chord as your BASS NOTE! I'd go on but it gets very technical. Just try your bass notes till you get a sound you like. Then, and very important . . . . resolve that bass note (make it go using the standard rules by Bach) to something that sounds logical. Don't just "jump" to any old note. You'll find you have a much more "flowing" arrangement that is pleasant to listen to. Enjoy . . .JZ!
