Ever notice that real metronomes don't have odd numbers on them?
Ever wonder why that might be?
I'll leave that as food for thought at this point...

Actually brings up a project I was going to tackle this afternoon. Lots of my music has the tempo on the sheet, ie.
quarter note = 88. So what`s the relation to tempo in Band in a Box. Normally I just let the wife say, that`s too slow see....and I roll my eyes.
The biggest advancement in the last few years is I can almost count in 4 4 and 3 4 time. Now I find I am really doing well at 2 2 if the baton moves right.
Except in those wild fast tempos......!
Maybe someone can just explain it to me in easy to understand terms. So the quarter note is 88 thus multiply by 4.......or

fyi i never tie a live drummer into fixed bpm. lol.
i'm not so silly. i want the variances/inventiveness.

This is a music forum, Manning... What do you call somebody who hangs out with musicians? Drum roll... A drummer! Ba-boom! So, following that logic, there might be a drummer or two around here  But how can you be so precise as exactly 139bpm? What about 140bpm??

all i was looking for was a drummer.
and was curious if any were here.
i wasnt looking for other extraneous comments.
(fyi...ive used lots of drummers over the decades, and fully realise
some like leeway and dont like clicks.
so why people are on my case with other non relevant comments i dont understand.)

Hey, Manning - You've been around here long enough to know that we're going to talk about stuff, relevant or not. That's what happens when we sit around together in this living room we call the PGMusic forum, just like you would with friends at home. No one's on your case; I just think that some just found it funny that the tempo was a number so exact, and somewhat out of the norm. I think that just falls under the category of gentle ribbing...
One musician says to the other, "How'd you like that song?"
The other replies, "I really liked it, but it was way too fast at 140. If he'd cut it back to 139, it would have been perfect."

Ya wanna see exacting tempos, run a wav file thru the ACW and tell it to find the bars. Then look at the tempo map! I agree that 140 would be a 'better' tempo to work with, but have also worked with guys that insisted on exact odd numbers too. Barry is one of those who has no qualms about odd numbers. I like easy math for figuring out delays, reverbs, etc, so I like working with even numbers. Remember 60,000 divided by tempo is MS for each beat, so working with odd numbers, then trying to divide it in half so the delay hits on the eighth note, and well you can see how even would be easier.. unless you have a calculator handy.  Good luck finding a drummer Manning1 What is it you need? I see drummers often, but they don't hang out here. Most of the ones I know can't read (ducking)

Why would someone critisize wanting a specific tempo saying one BTM doesn't matter and in the same breath praise the drummer that plays the back beat a little late saying it really gives the song a laid back feel. In some tunes 1 BPM may matter. I'm playing one now at 64 BPM.

64 (you mention) is an even number ...
also, at higher numbers that one bpm makes less difference.
You'd be hard pressed to tell 139 from 140. Even harder at 169 to 170
I'm not knocking Manning1, whatever tempo he wants is fine, I just like working in even numbers.
The fact that 139 is a prime number makes the math even tougher!
I think most music you see with a tempo will usually show an even number too.
Just makes the math easier, you get whole numbers when subdividing.
..and none of this has anything to do with laying back on the beat... I don't see the correlation there. Although I'm pretty sure you weren't talking to me on that anyway.. I'll have to recheck the thread

Playing in tempo and playing behind the beat are two entirely different things.
If someone is playing behind the beat, I still need for them to be in Tempo...

Very sorry to hear that, Manning and I apologise for irritating you. NOI It has been a bad year here too and highly UN-conducive to song writing or recording. I think I may be having a mid life crisis. Boken hearted, medical problems, financial problems, business delays... Let's hope we can both pull out of our bad spells soon Good luck

Bob I took odd as being unconventional not mathematically an odd #. Yes the higher the tempo the less likly to hear a difference.
Mac I meant that if someone is sensitive enough to tell the difference between a back beat right on the money and one laid back they may also be sensitive to slight tempo changes.
