Guys
Check this out. My current Laptop is a Dell Latitude 610, windows XP, 2 GHQ Pentium single core, 2 Giggs of Ram, 250 Gigs of Hard drive space. I am currently using mainly PG software such as BAND IN A BOX 2008, POWER TRACKS, REAL BAND. My question is this. I know that most of the main line Daw software system Specs are requiring DUAL CORE processor machines. I am wondering if I just may have enough power and ofcourse a good enough laptop to install Ableton Live 8 or the latest Cubase 5 version. A friend of mine wants to give me his Cubase SX 3 for free. Said he doesn't need it 'cause he has never used it. It is still in the box. He is now into a Pro tools system.
Any feed back from y'all out there would be greatly appreciated

My DAW is a five-year-old AMD Athlon (P4 equivalent) 1.8 GHz with 2 Gb RAM and two 7200-RPM drives. OS is XP Pro; not sitting at the machine and don't recall whether I have SP2 or 3.
I have Cubase VST, a bundled version which came with my TASCAM US-224 control surface. It is a full version except for having only one level of undo. Cubase runs fine on this rig as long as it is all I am doing. I am also able to run Steinberg Nuendo 1.x and Propellerhead Reason 3.0 together (linked via Rewire) without difficulty. Task Manager shows that the processor loads up frequently, but musical apps still run smoothly. I have only had issues with glitches or complete lockup when running non-music software.
Note that, although am connected to the Internet, I have no antivirus or firewall software (which means I am VERY careful about where I go when connected.)
I think your 610 will work fine. As Mac says, load it up and see.

Got your reply guys. Thanks for the information. Greatly appreciated. As I always say, this forum enables me to get good tips from seasoned pros and more experienced users in the Music production / Computer arena. That's so important to many of us gigging musicians kinda getting started and wetting our feet (so to speak) into the Home studio vibe.
Hey Ryzard, I have a Mcafee anti virus running on this Dell Latitude 610 that I have. The sites are go to are mainly Yahoo, hotmail, Gmail and ofcourse music websites. Don't really go on any other site..at least hardly. As you mentioned about the fact that you have no anti virus and firewall and thus you are very cautious as to the sites you go to, I was just wondering. I say this because, man, I tell ya, you never can tell. It sounds kinda risky in my opinion. My windows fire wall is also on.
I will load up the Cubase sx3 soon and will let y'all know how it works. Ryzard, it is interesting that you mentioned REASON because in my "live" gigs, I use mainly my Yamaha Mottif ES7. I play lots of Ballads, Jazz and at church, a Lot of Praise and Worship music. I need to have more tones at my disposal, more Electric Piano, Rhodes, Pads, strings, and horn-like tones, not forgetting nice and strong Gran/ Acoustic piano tones. The Yamaha Mottif ES7 tones are great but I need much more. I have been reading up on Reason. Would Reason running on a Laptop with an M-Audio Fast Track interface hooked up to my Motif give me a whole lot more options, tones-wise? I need that big sound..like the Pros...ofcourse.............lol.
Any feedback to this post would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks as always.

I have another machine which I use for email and surfing. On the DAW I go ONLY to manufacturers' sites (and, of course, here) for updates and other information. There is still a risk, of course, but I consider it minimal.
Anybody you ask will tell you that you don't want any extraneous apps on a DAW, but antivirus programs in particular, because it is impossible to remove them from memory short of uninstalling them.

IMO, it is more appropriate to think about Reason as an infinitely expandable synth, loop player, and effects device (subject to memory limitations). I have one friend who has no hardware synths other than a percussion machine. He uses Reason for all of his sounds, most of which he creates himself. Hear examples at Dream Level 7. Everything but guitar and voice is generated by Reason. The music may not be to your taste, but I think you'll be impressed with the sounds.
Of note, I use Reason 3 on my DAW, which is equivalent to yours. Reason 4 may demand more than a single processor and 2 gigs of RAM can deliver.
