November 22, the lost celebration...

I got Bach going for the morning...then maybe some medieval cd's later!

In earlier times in the US Chicago and New York had masonic lodges called St. Cecilia's Lodges, who met on Saturdays during the day, and were for the musicians and actors who worked during the weeknights when most lodges were held.

As Roberston Davies said, "we have become a generation of listeners, not singers".

Or in my words, "how recorded music killed family music."

Sousa did not want his bands recorded and firmly held that people should attend the concerts and local music....but we are where we are I guess..

November 22, the date we celebrate the patron saint of music, at least our CBC radio 2 has a St. Cecila's Day broadcast of chorale music...

Interesting history. Thanks, John.

Long live live music.

[As an aside, we have a local band here - probably you do, too - with the name, 'Live Music". Whatever bar or restaurant they play in, the little sign or placard out front is always correct: "Live Music Tonight". Whenever they aren't playing, the other local group, "Music Tonight," is there.]

Once knew a local band that called themselves, "Tnemniatretne Evil" because their first gig was in front of a big glass bar window that had "Live Entertainment" painted on it.

They pronounced it, "Ta-nem-nia-tret-na Evil".

Didn't catch on.

Last time I was in Rome, September 2008, I made a special pilgrimage to St Cecilia's tomb in the church in Transtevere. That was the second time I had gone to her tomb. Amazing story.

St Cecilia, RIP

Ahhh Cecilia, my first love. Not the Saint, I’m not that old, but she was a Saint nonetheless, at least in mind she was. Broke my heart she did . . . but I digress.

Interesting bit of musical history.

Did you ever find out who the guy was that took your place, when you got up to wash your face?

Never did like that tune as it cast a disparaging light on “my” sweet Cecilia.

I knew a Cecilia when I was at teacher training school in London. She was a real slapper! Straggly dirty blonde hair, leopard skin leggings and a badly ripped and torn leather jacket. 35 years old and with a terrible mouth on her. Cruel as hell. She was the teacher trainer! Man, I didn't like her at all and went around whistling that song all the time. She really was a b*tch
