I have BiaB 2007 and haven't really used it much probably because it has more features than I need or will use. Anyway, here is my question. Can I record an electric guitar with this? I have played along with songs I've done by inserting the chords & like having strings, bass, drums, etc to play with. I would not be using the sound card in the PC. I have an M-Audio Black Box which will mix a guitar & microphone together to a USB port. I went into the audio menu & set this device as my input device, but I get the feeling this was for MIDI only. Basically, I'd like to pick a style, set up the background, then record guitar & voice over it.
Is this possible to do, or am I wasting my time? If I could get a few to tips to point me in the right direction I believe I'd be on my way.
Thanks

Keeping in mind that within BIAB you only have one (1) audio recording track available, you can certainly record your mixed guitar and vocal to this single track via a USB audio device. Although RB is a full DAW that would allow multiple tracks, but that is a different story. It is just a matter of configuration of your hardware and BIAB.
You are starting in the right place with Audio - Audio Drivers/Settings where you set MME or ASIO as appropriate (start with MME). Just need to be sure BIAB is recieving from your audio interface.
Oh, and one last thing, Welcome to the Forum.

You can record Audio to the BIAB single Audio track if your version isn't so old it doesn't have that feature.
Look to the right of the track names and if you see, "Audio" at the end, you can record Audio.
There's a separate toolbar button for doing that, or use the Audio menu.

Thanks guys, I think I am getting close. I changed the audio driver to ASIO & now see the BB device. I tried some drum beats, but don't hear nothing. Will try with the guitar tomorrow, kinda late here.
Appreciate the help!

Welcome to the forum, Tony. The short answer is YES. You can. You need to set the input sound card to your external soundcard. If it doesn't show up in the options, you may have to reinstall the software for it. However, RB or PTPA are better for inputting 2 tracks simultaneously

Just a correction regarding RealBand...
First, it is true that BIAB gives you only 1 Audio Track to record on and/or to import an audio track...
Second, RealBand has 48 tracks. True. But I found out you can only record one track at a time...

Tchairdjian a correction mate. it is your sound device that dictates how many audio traks you can record at a time in realband. its my understanding that (and someone can correct me if i'm wrong).. that you could theoretically record 48 audio traks at a time IF you had a sound device capable of such , as well as a powerfull enough computer config. whats your sound device your useing ?? its prolly just capable of recording one mono or one stereo trak at a time. read the realband docs n help on how to record multiple traks at a time. i havent looked recently but i havent seen any 48 input sound devices that are cheap. therein lies the rub. you could try one of the echo audiofire firewire devices. i understand they will let you record 12 audio traks at a time. youll have to run tests also and see if your pc can keep up. you select the device in audio preferences. then on the traks themselves via a drop down you would select which port to use. its all in the manual etc.
retired puter engr....powertracks on amd......NICE ! "what is the black art of audio engineering ?" my silly songs...motagator.com/bmanning see my tips in the tips section.

That is not the case.
The average stereo single input consumer soundcard is limited to two mono inputs at a time, in the single stereo L & R inputs available. Two mics via two mic preamps or mixer into Line Input are possible and RB can route these to two separate mono audio tracks simultaneously.
OR -- If you own and install a Multiple Input Soundcard, you are only limited by the throughput power of your computer and the 48 track limit as to how many simultaneous inputs RB can record at the same time.
I have routinely used the Delta 1010 card or the E-MU1616M multiple-input devices with RB, recording 8 inputs at once at least.

I've seen some comments that USB can be problematic because of the burst mode of data transfer. Can anyone here comment on how stable USB really is. Wyndham

There are more and more people using USB audio every day without problems. I think it should be limited to single stereo channel input, though. Don't think there are many if any that have more channels anyway.
Friend of mine has been using his M-Audio Fast Track Pro USB and a Toshiba laptop with BIAB and PT for about a year now. Originally there were troubles with Vista and that laptop, Toshiba support helped iron out the biggest one and ever since then its been rather smooth sailing for him.

Sorry guys, I haven't tried it myself. I got my information from one of the support staff at PGMusic... I was surpised myself... but she insisted....
I just purchased a Tascam US-144 MK2 USB 2.0 which has 4 inputs... Maybe I'll give it a try.

The TASCAM US-144 has FOUR inputs? My TASCAM US-122 has two. You can record the left input to one track in RB and the other to a second track

I have an M-Audio Black Box which will mix a guitar & microphone together to a USB port. Thanks
I use the same device. Aside from one little issue a while back, it has been set it and forget it. I use it as my standard soundcard, and can plug the guitar in any time. Have also used the mic.
Someone asked about USB. The m-audio website documents a little fix which cured an issue for me. A problem with USB ports - perhaps the problem - is that powersaving is turned on by default. This means that some committe at Microsoft came to a decision about saving the .01 miliamps of power to the USB port when "no activity" is taking place - based upon some stupid algorythm. Long story short, it would work fine then it would disappear. After I learned how to disable power-saving for the particular USB port always connected to the black box - i've never had a problem with it.
Google m-audio black box USB and it should take you there.

Problems with USB devices - USB Root Hub Power Management problems (XP)
Q: My M-Audio USB Audio- or MIDI interface fails to install, doesn't work after installation, or drops out of the system every now and then. What could be the cause of this?
A: A common reason for such problems is the Power Management function of the USB Root Hub. Under Windows XP, disabling the Power Management for all USB Root Hubs in your system should resolve this problem:
1. Open the Device Manager (Start-> right click on "My Computer", click on "Properties" -> Hardware -> Device Manager) 2. Look under the category Universal Serial Bus controllers and find the USB Root Hub. 3. Right click and select Properties, go to the Power Management tab 4. Uncheck the box "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." and click "OK".
Repeat this for each of the USB Root Hubs shown in the Device Manager.
Finally, I have found a cool signature with sufficiently dry humor.
