Thanks, Andrew! I'll keep my eyes on the E-Mu site. I'm guessing fianoman will as well.

I just looked at the EMU site and there's a driver there dated 12/17/2009. I'll give it a try when I get home tonight.

Well, that turned out to be the same driver as I already had. So I'll wait...

When I installed that driver file, as it finished installing, I received a notice that my driver was already the most recent; that's why I stated that I already had it. I'll try uninstalling and re-installing and then see if all works.

Andrew, thanks for the info. Emu's site is down right now but I will check it again later. I am hoping that it's a newer version than the one I downloaded a few weeks ago.

Yeah, those are the same files that I tried a few weeks ago. Doesn't fix the issue.

Those files are "old" already so maybe they have even newer ones coming? I don't know but if anyone finds out, please post an update here.

I just tried installing those drivers. I deleted my original drivers (because every time I tried to install, it told me my drivers were up to date. So after deleting, it installed and I had to reboot my machine. Upon reboot, it shows the same 2006 version drivers. The web site indicated driver version 5.12.1.4, but when I install these drivers in XP, I always get 5.12.1.2. I suspect that if I do it in Vista or Win7, I'll get newer drivers, but for XP, it's the same drivers that don't work (well, don't work in RealBand, they work fine in BIAB and every other application I try).

Okay, so I went into Vista, and it showed that it was using 5.12.1.2 (not 5.12.1.4) that the web site seems to indicate would be installed.

Of course, Realband works fine with the XMIDI in Vista.

Bottom line for me is that it works in BIAB and every other program. It's not a very sophisticated device. Should work in Realband so that should be the first place to investigate. There is a bug in RB somewhere.

My two cents, for what that's worth. :-)

Well, since Andrew already told us that a problem was found with the E-MU drivers and that E-MU was releasing a fix, presumably then indicating that PGMusic had contacted E-MU development directly on this, and if E-MU is saying on their webpage that the driver is one version but as John has found out, it installs a different version than the one they are referring to, in two different OS's, it sure sounds to me like E-MU is the place to start asking questions...

So today E-MU makes an announcement.

The new one is class-compliant, plug 'n play, no drivers needed, but apparently they have drivers for "multiclient support" -- I guess that means having two or more MIDI programs open at the same time. That would be cool with the PGMusic Drag 'n Drop feature.

Thirty bucks.

Follow up:

Just downloaded a fresh new driver from the Emu site and....

IT WORKS! Seems to have fixed the problem with RB. Here is the link:

http://www.emu.com/support/files/download2.asp?Centric=1009&Legacy=0&Platform=1

I did a quick test and it was recording fine. John, give it a try and see if it does it for you too!

Hats off to everyone who offered assistance, Mac, Andrew, John, etc...

E-MU did indeed turn out to be the place to start asking the questions.

Just now had a chance to install the new driver and it seems to work fine.

I still maintain that it seems that BIAB and RealTracks/PowerTracks read the available MIDI devices differently somehow, because it worked just fine in BIAB.

fianoman/jford..//other users...just a piece of info...
it is important to understand that the WIN OS sits tween the user daw music software
and the sound device.
on start up of any music software the proper term is "device enumeration".
the music daw says to windows "hi honey what midi n audio devices are there on this pc ??"
and windows reports back a list of input n output midi and audio device drivers.

a good read sometime if one wants to understand is the windows developers site called MSDN.
eg....
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd370840(VS.85).aspx
on the left hand pane are oodles of topics covering developing under windows.
i would urge any end user to read at their leisure many developer
topics covered to see how win works.
then one will realise that the music application is seperated
from the actual midi or audio sound device the user is useing.
the reason i suggest reading the above link and spending some time with the deep details is one will then readily see as mac always says...
its DRIVERS cos the daw itself is divorced from the sound device.
the sound device could be the "made in freddys basement" sound device.
windows n the daw application dont care..all win and the daw app do is
work with what the user has got as a sound device.
spending some time at the msdn site , it will be soon realised that often the daw application is blamed incorrectly on various recording forums for problems.

Well, there *are* differences. The one I'm thinking of is the fact that BiaB is a "single address" MIDI Output, only able to deal with one at a time. Something in the driver must have balked at that. It is very likely that E-MU developers didn't realize that there might still be a popular program out there that still works like that. So they didn't include the software dance necessary to deal with it. OR -- they are programming with an object-oriented package that no longer has that part of the thing in it. Drag 'n Drop. "Goprammers" is what I call 'em, the kids that always freak out when I resort to going full Machine Code, as if it was some sort of ancient voodoo art or something. (grin)

Whatever it was, it was obviously something Emu had to fix. I'm with Mac in that it likely had to do with the multiple port selection scheme in RB. Heavily registry reliant.. looks for what the OS reports back as a good driver.

They probably focused on the 'plug-n-play' aspect where it loaded itself up and took over without properly registering, if I were to take a guess. Jeff Y is probably one of the few that know the underlying issues.

Just glad it got fixed, as I know we have one of these in the studio, just haven't had cause to use it lately. All the systems now have regular MIDI connections. But someday we may want to use separate ports again..

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome
