I am stoked to see the new ability to generate and regenerate realtracks directly on the utility tracks as demonstrated in the 'sticky' video links posted by Callie and Tobin. This is a huge step forward in usability!

BUT... How much more difficult would it be to add an 'Auto-Regenerate' tick box against the utility track and have it get automatically regenerated along with the main song tracks to take into account chord changes and song form changes?

At present I can see the utility tracks being really useful once you have pretty much finished tinkering with the song form and chords but an auto-regenerate feature would mean that they could be more easily utilised earlier on in the song construction process. Obviously not ticking the auto-regenerate box would keep them working as at present (which can also be very useful for specific purposes).

I am being a bit greedy, but would this be really difficult to add?

Many thanks

Regards, Aubrey

Perhaps a "tick" in mixer menu settings?

That is already being discussed. PG has said that the ability to be handled like typical RTs in the style tracks is a feature that will be implemented in time. Right not the generation was added until they can get to that. Immediate needs are pounding any remaining new bugs, and then the Mac release will be coming. I can see this feature being added before the end of the year but who knows.

Thanks for the responses!

Rustyspoon - I like the 'tick' in the mixer settings idea! +1 to your +1!

Rob - glad to see that this is being discussed (I must have missed those posts). It would be awesome if this first implementation is, as you suggest, just the foundation layer for having an extra 16 fully functional mixer tracks. Likewise, I also hope that the 24 bit audio capability that has been introduced is a stepping stone to having 24 bit Realtracks in the near future.

I am slightly concerned about how big a deal it will be to convert the Mac code for the new Apple In-house chips and I hope that this doesn't eat up too much coding effort that could be better spent on addressing new features such as the above.

Many thanks

Regards, Aubrey

Aubrey, yes, there has been lots of discussion on this. PG Music has already provided (with build 804) far more capability than we expected in testing or at release time. It's a work in progress and already allows me to do all kinds of things I could not do before while staying within BIAB.

You raise a great point about converting the code to Mac. We were told the code base is now the same for the Win and Mac platforms, and that's the reason the Mac version came so much earlier last spring than expected. But the new OS may complicate things, in true Apple fashion. ps I have both Win and Mac versions.

Or maybe simply the 'freeze' 'unfreeze' blue star on each utility track, same as the standard ones.
Isnt BB in danger of becoming a 16 track basic DAW now?
And regeneration time for a mega-uti!ity rich SGU could be epic for older machines like mine. whistle

Sixchannel,
YES it is a real "danger" smile 16 Tracks Happened! Hurrah PG team!

Sixchannel,
Do not worry, your machine will pull it! As it is, it generates once (unless you regenerate manually). Once regenerated it is a solid audio - acts similar to "Freezed" track.

The discussion is about adding an option to automate regeneration.
Not to have it by default.

Also, you do not have to use all 16 tracks! You can use and have displayed only one extra track (or 3 or 5 extra tracks) if you wish. It is very flexible and should accommodate almost any setup.

Rusty, are you emphasizing 'option' because of the discussions elsewhere about having too much load on the computer if all tracks are regenerated? That's a valid concern. I would expect that if all tracks could regenerate, then we would freeze the ones we did not want to regenerate.

One of the things I have learned over decades is that I see more success at presenting concepts to PG Music, but less success at specifying the exact steps to implement. We users do not get to make that decision. Often, I am pleasantly surprised by something they do that we never even considered.

Matt,
"I see more success at presenting concepts to PG Music"
Asked Andrew to join beta, he kindly declined. So it make sense for me to discuss things here, especially on the most important feature in BIAB to me. Which is 16 tracks and while it is being crafted smile

The "option" of Utility Tracks to automate regeneration is a broad question. It depends on where things are going with Utility Tracks. Automating with ticker in mixer will only require a couple of lines of code. Temporary or not, it will give an immediate solution and time saving relief to PG customer support with questions like: "I am regenerating, but my Utility Tracks are not." Unless developers are hot and will find a creative and elegant way to solve it. Of course, if Utility tracks will start acting as regular Mixer tracks (see pipeline post), "freeze" button will/should be added and that in fact will solve everything for once concerning slower machines and selectively deciding what will be regenerated and what will not.

I wanted to re-assure poster Sixchannel that he has nothing to worry about concerning Utility Tracks. And so goes for everyone who have slower systems and who are concerned. Extra Utility Tracks tracks are added on demand to mixer 1 or all 16 of them. You do not need to have them or use these in your projects. But I think many people will smile

P.S. My personal opinion, regenerating standard 7 legacy mixer tracks + 3-6 Utility tracks, should not be a big deal at all for slower systems.

You could be right. My experience comparing the regeneration times of different computers, all else being equal, is that the power of the CPU is by far the greatest predictor of regeneration speed, followed by using a SSD instead of traditional hard drive. These two things also most distinguish a powerful computer from a 'slower' one. RAM is a distant third here, assuming other applications are not open.
