It's almost like getting around Japan
As a veteran MIDI user (even before Cubase was invented) I got to produce dozens of albums and even produce a song for Eurovision with the help of DAW but something was always missing.
Especially with increasing age, and the so-called flooding utilities, loops, ready-made phrases atc ..
I felt like I was starting to drown, and the time devoted to creation was lost due to technical flooding.
BIAB enters exactly where the missing and complementary space between (cubase / logic) and (ableton)
And I did not understand why the others do not understand this?
What the hell keeps a band in a box from capturing the hearts of professional musicians?

I purchased the software with excitement and discovered how easy it is to start creating without committing and what power it has in providing companion live tools
And on the other hand the user interface is completely confused, as if 8 different programmers were working on it together. There is no uniformity and human engineering in reaching trivial things like click / metronome, the transposition in each component (style channel / melody / soloist / audio / utility) is in a different location. Orientation is non-intuitive and does not resemble any of the accepted software and it is a pity.
and yet
I think this software is a gift for musicians and it will only become a significant thing.
I love her despite the limitations.

IMO preconceived notions.
My best friend for about 50 years now (seriously) wouldn't consider it until one day I played him something I was playing around with, and he said "who did the sax?"
I had to giggle.
So next project, we had a drummer that refused to allow his drum recording be used on a given song .. what to do?
Started generating RDs .. got it close enough to the actual original recording that my buddy again bit.

"you generated this?! A couple of the licks are almost exact!"
Yep
"So can we cut/paste it to better fit the original recording?"
Yep
"Do we even need the drummer anymore?"
Yep

We can generate close (usually) and sometimes very close to the target.
However, I would never have ended up with the end result had that drummer not played what he did so I knew what it needed.

Best part; the drummer was OK with it.
Everyone ended up happy.

This is one pro musician who has made use of BIAB since the early 90s. While I have not used BIAB tracks on a commercial recording, I’ve used it in every possible way to prepare for them.

BIAB 2025 Win Audiophile. Software: Studio One 7 Pro, Swam horns, Acoustica-7, Notion 6, Song Master Pro, Win 11 Home. Hardware: Intel i9, 32 Gb; Roland Integra-7, Presonus 192 & Faderport 8, Royer 121, Adam Sub8 & Neumann 120 monitors.

Exactly; use it for what it does.
Would I expect to end up with a final production full song using only it .. probably not.
But it gets me a long way down the road pretty quickly.
And in my above example it actually worked in reverse. I had the finished idea and was able to generate it close enough that the rest of band said "that'll work!"

.. including the drummer whose track we replaced
that one surprised even me

Oxymoron yes, the post gives an accurate description of Band In A Box.
New users would find it difficult to navigate as it's something that has developed in another isolated world over the years.
But thankfully we now have the Band In A Box DAW Plugin and also the
Band-in-a-Box DAW Plugin Standalone.exe for this reason.

for those of us that started with BIAB on floppy discs we've grown up with it as it has got more complicated. its a steep learning curve for a newbie and despite me trying to help over the phone, one person I know gave up as it was to complicated and claimed their 30 day cash refund.

Thank you for your enriching answers. And again BIAB has given me a romantic curiosity again, and I am definitely planning beautiful moments with her smile
Forgive the bugs that are fixed with each update and life is beautiful.

As someone fairly new to BIAB, it seems accurate to say that BIAB has wonderful features with a tragically flawed interface. There seem to be two categories of users here: (1) Those who are going to insist using it regardless of how much a pain the GUI is, because of the end results, and (2) Those who are too impatient, who will not.

One wonders how many sales are lost due to this, and whether this is a reason it's not more well-known.

Others that are more experienced at BIAB have said repeatedly on these forums that the best way to approach BIAB is to at first use its most basic features and not get fancy, and then, only after a lot of experience, try using the more advance features. Be patient and build up your knowledge slowly.

I fell into this trap -- starting off with an existing song that had a complicated song structure with complicated timing and it drove me crazy. Still, I could see its potential, so I persisted.

So true
On the one hand and really easily I built a framework for Arrangement
Then the troubles began:
You wanted to export to the audio channels I recorded, but no. There is a drag and drop that didn't really work until the 818
Channels that had RT are not always possible to return to MIDI mode and upload a plugin
But bugs can be fixed.
More annoying is the non-intuitive interface. Each type of treatment channel is in a different area, even a click that is a basic thing, we have to play recorded and it is bizarre.
And again. I'm complaining but in love with the idea and the genius side of the software.
And now I will share a little secret?
I may have an advantage in that my competitors do not buy the software.

Have you checked out this below page of instructional video clips? These may help with deepening your understanding.

If you scroll down the web page a bit, you'll find sections for users at the following levels of BIAB understanding: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced.

Just in cast this interests you....

At the below link you'll find one of my songs that highlights some of the more advanced features of BIAB. The chordsheet is on display so that you can see what is happening as the song plays.

First of all thank you and pleasure to hear your work.
As a professional and experienced user of the other software, I have already entered most of the features and I even record my own audio user tracks.
And at the same time: there is still an irrationality in the fact that if you want to quantize on a certain instant channel you have to wander with the mouse to the hallucinatory places. There is a lack of uniformity in similar actions.
And again. I'm addicted to software. Cursing and kissing.

I've used BIAB for many years as a practice tool, so I'm used to a lot of its quirks/inconsistencies/opportunities for improvement. My professional career was software engineering; for the last eleven years on what was essentially two flagship products. Even as the sole programmer on those products, I can point to places where the interface is inconsistent, confusing, and possibly completely irrational, to say nothing of broken (some legacy issues, some introduced by yours truly under scheduling pressure). In short, software is damned hard to write so that it works at all, let alone flawlessly. That BIAB does as much as it does is testament to the underlying quality of the code. That said, I hope that PGMusic takes seriously complaints of quirks, et cetera, and continues to refine the user experience. Ease of use will vary from user to user of course, but should not be a bar to entry. Easy to use, hard to break; that's good software. And there is no perfect software, so strive to be very, very good software.

ugabay,
Have you tried Realband?
It is included with your BiaB product and acts more like a DAW, so it may fit that 'bridge' between generating and DAW that you are yearning for.
And the menus/UI may work better for you.
I now it does for me but that may be because of my expected workflow experience

I think another way to look at it is that if you make a list of all the things it does and how each relates to the other, it becomes clear that this software would be extremely difficult to make any other way. Add to the fact that it is under constant scrutiny and pressure to change to the whims of users that use a plethora of different DAW and synth programs.

Melody builder
Chord builder
Auto Chord wizards
Real drums
Real tracks
Super midi tracks

Just to name a few the add stuff like song structures features, DAW plugin boxes, you name it and try to sort those out to make sense to thousands of users that all have a slightly different workflow process. You begin to see the ominous job PGM has to to do each passing year.

There has been many refinements and I expect that will continue, but any time someone compares BiaB to some other software I cring, as they are truly the most extreme examples of apples and oranges. BiaB is more of a fruit salad in my opinion. I hear folks say it isn’t as easy this or that software is, maybe not, but that software does one thing not 30 things that can be done in one somewhat jumbled box.

I love the suggestion above, watch all the tutorial videos try each feature with test projects, then you will have a more well rounded understanding of the program.
