Big sister got me BIAB for Xmas ( after months of heavy hints ) , am sitting here trying to figure stuff out , picking it up easyly enough , very intuitive. However , I have some midi files which I have worked out how to import into BIAB but unfortunately some of them import as one channel (everything is going through Melody ) and so I am unable to work on individual instruments. It sounds good and I love the way BIAB deals with it, chords etc. Is there a way to seperate the differnet instruments so that I can manipulate them individually within BIAB ?
Sorry for the ultra newbie question and I fear there may be some more coming your way , but how else am I going to learn if I shy from asking the obvious

Hi and welcome!

Midi files come in two flavours - type 0 and type 1

Type 0 have all the instruments on one track, type 1 has each instrument on a separate track. Sounds like you've got some of both

I'm not sure how to get round this in BIAB, but if you Google 'midi file converter' or similar, you should be able to find a small app that can convert between the two

regards,

Martin

Open the file in RealBand instead.
Then use 'edit-extract channels to tracks' - this will put them all on their own tracks

Than save it as Type1 midi.
Should do it

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

BIAB places MIDI files on the melody track. Do as Rharv said.

Sorry it took so long to get back but as well as having lots of stuff IRL to do I have also had my head buried int the BIAB manual. A big thanks for the suggestion to use Real band , it worked a treat and I can see how to save it as Midi 1.
As I said in my first post I would be back asking other newbie questions. And so here goes ....
I only have experience in editing wavs within Audition up to now and my midi knowledge is as good as zilch but I would like to learn. The thing I am trying to do now is take midis into BIAB / RB and add vst sounds to them then be able to export them as wav files to then mix them and add voice and some live recordings of other instruments. Thing is I have yet to work out how to save the midi tracks i have edited out to wav in RB. Can anyone help ??
agian thanks
EDIT : Sorry should have mentioned that when I do try to sav as wav I get the message ,'Nothing selected' Im guessing how to do that is where my problem lies.

All depends heavily on what you are using for a MIDi output synth.

DXi synths, you can do a Direct Render to wav files (File -> Wave Files -> Merge... inside RB).

However, if you are using a hardware external MIDI synth, Direct Rendering is not possible beacause the sounds are generated outside the realm of the PC's CPU. In that instance, you have to have the Audio Outputs of the external synth connected to the Line Inputs of your soundcard, set for Line Input in its Record Properties, arm an audio track for Stereo record inside RB and play back that MIDi track, Solo'd, while recording the performance from start to finish to the Audio wav track. You can then either add effects and mix down to stereo track inside RB or choose to export the tracks one at a time as .wav files suitable for import into another sequencing software.

Many times I just mute all the other tracks except for the MIDI tracks and record those to one stereo track, for there isn't much to be gained by trying to remix them in the audio domain. Then I have one stereo audio track of all the MIDi tracks to mix with my added audio tracks. Again, I do the Merge from the Wave Tracks to get that finished stereo .wav file of the mixdown.

Mac I really appreciate you taking your time to explain all this to me. Im not actually a stupid person but I would have no problem with you speaking to me as to a child in order for me to understand what to do I think I understood most of that except the bit about Arming a midi for recording.Do you mean I have to play the midi track and have it record inside of RB to a wav then export the wav? If so , and heres the child part , how do I go about doing that ?? If you could explain I would be grateful.
And no I have no external synth , using nothing but a soundcard on my computer. I see options for midi channels and sending dxis directly etc but right now its all beyong my ken.

Update , I went in again with what you said in mind and found the Merge option , I used Forte as my DXi on all instruments and did an experimental merge , got a message saying ' Some tracks are not assigned DXi , and will be silent ,do you want to assing them the default synth? -

I gathered that any track with no synth had no sound so I said no , chose Merge and it succesfully sent out a wav file , but on openingthe wav it was silent , what am I doing wrong ?

Keep experimenting and practicing with it.

It might be that there were no MIDI tracks assigned to a synth at all in that file...

But if you want more help, you should at least tell me what you are trying to use for your MIDI output synth when you just play it back in RB. Yer makin' me pull teeth here...

I honestly dont mean to make this difficult , if its unclear its becuase I am not sure what Im talking about ( ,better to admit ignorance and learn :@) . )
I have been allocating garriton intruments to different midi channels. I was hoping to be able to export them individualy to them be able to take them into a wave editor and apply some effects to some of them before mixing down.
I manged to merge the tracks as wavs and export them , I thnk I now know what you mean by muting the others and exporting one at a time. I will try that. I was hoping there might be a feature similar to the 'Make wav for each track - that is in BIAB .
