malware istray.dll is reported on her laptop. avast won't detect it. seems to have slowed machine. can't find a fix on web. also lists ismon.dll can not be found. tried majorgeeks.com, no help. any ideas?

i get a message that they are resolving an issue with combofix - do not download it. any other ideas, mac? what about running 'tango'?where do i find tango again?

I recommend going here and following their instructions to prepare for the next attack. Sometimes you need to have certain tools onboard beforehand; some badware won't let you go after it when you need it.

Don, I often use HiJackThis to get a picture of what is loaded into my computer when it's running. It's freeware and you can get it from... http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/ (I suggest using the executable version of 2.0.2) Be careful when you use this program. If you put a check mark next to something to "fix" it, HiJackThis's fix is not recoverable if you make an error. You need to be absolutely certain beforehand that you have found the problem. If in doubt, save a log of the results of running HiJackThis and email it to me (nadams96[@]gmail.com - just remove the brackets around @). I'm happy to have a look at it. IMPORTANT- First: save a copy of your registry files before making any corrections. To do this, I use a little freeware program called ERUNT - Emergency Recovery Utility NT - which works well with XP or Vista (run as administrator).
- Second: search each of the suspect files using Google and see what turns up. It's usually very easy to isolate the problem file(s).
If the problem file can't be removed because it's reported as "being in use", I would then boot up the computer using a liveCD of Ubuntu and see if I can delete the offending file (this usually works because Windows is not loaded when booting into Ubuntu). Hope this helps. Regards, Noel

Did you run a boot scan with Avast? If not do.
I also use PC Tools Spyware Doctor. Best on the market.
If Avast boot scan doesn't help try the others in Safe Mode.
MOST IMPORTANT. Make sure their not False Positives.
Last resort before reformat. Pull the drive and put it in a USB caddy and hook it to your computer and scan the external drive. In this way Windows is not running on that drive and you'll catch it while it's sleeping.

Lots of excellent suggestions above but you may want to prepare yourself for a fresh install of the operating system. If you have not done a fresh install in a year or more then this would be a good time. Reinstalling the OS will speed your system up tremendously even if you were to get the malware cleaned up. But best of all you know that your system is virgin clean with no infections, trojans, backdoors, zombies or time bombs.

I also very much like Spybot Search and Destroy. Freeware, very highly rated, and I recommend it.

I also use Spybot S&D as well as Malwarebytes as second opinion scanners to Spyware Doctor and Avast.
