Anybody experiencing heavily distorted crackling over their RB tacks in 2010? 2009.5 worked perfectly. The route of the output is correct in that it is using ASIO with my external soundcard. BIAB 2010 works fine as do all the other recording software. Any suggestions?

if you wish , you can read my tips in the tips n triks section
where i explain why crackles occur on a pc or audio interruptions.
this might not be your case..
just something to think about...
if increasing buffers dont help.
but often it can be caused by two main situations.
1. other devices on the same bus (pci/fw/usb)
possibly locking out the sound device.
think of a motorway or freeway.
too many cars and traffic jams can occur.
same with puter busses.
load em up n traffic jams can occur.
2. sometimes recording and playin back from the
same drive as win resides on can give problems.
on some pc's you can get away with it..
but ideally if you read any pc daw set up guides on the net ,
youll see a dedicated hard drive for recording n playback
is recommended. with a good large cache. eg 32 mb.
what happens is on some pc's win can interrupt to do its thing
if recording to the same drive as win is on.
its a traffic issue once again .
cos the one drive is being asked to not only service the
win os but also audio daw activities.
on some systems it only becomes noticeable once
trak counts increase substantially.
if you continue to have probs..
post your puter config n drive details.
also its a good idea to test your drives occasionally to see if they
are up to spec. on certain pc's win has been known to
revert the drive to a lower spec if probs are encountered.

If you are also using softsynths for MIDI or realtime plugins, it may indeed be necessary to increase your ASIO buffer accordingly to prevent dropouts. May be needed even if you aren't...

Thanks peers, I will adjust the ASIO settings tonight when I look at it again. It was just strange how the 2009.5 version just worked where all I had to do was choose the driver. And the new version needs further tweaking.
I appreciate your reponses. Manning, if I continue to have problems after adjusting the buffers, what computer settings would you need me to note here that can be indicators to you where the problem may be?

The new coding may just require a bit more overhead than previously.
This is not all that uncommon, even on other audio recording programs, I find that I'm often changing my ASIO buffers to a low point *when trackin* in order to get low latency at that phase of the game, but during mixdowns, when I start applying Realtime Effects and stuff, I start to get dropouts and have to raise the ASIO buffer setting to get through the mixdown.
Increasingly, the use of MME drivers, which are actually using your Windows WDM drivers or better, is the way to go, as the latency of these drivers has been steadily decreasing with time and they have been known to approach and sometimes even exceed the low latencies we used to expect only from the ASIO drivers. I find it to be a trial and error subjuect for each machine and software here.
One thing that some may not get is that both drivers make the exact same PCM digital audio file. There is no audio difference or difference in audio quality for one vs the other.

Thanks Mac, your counsel on the hardware is greatly appreciated. I am still learning how to tweak these types of parameters and how moving them win on one side while losing on another.
If I understand you correctly, the MME drivers are located on the Window OS? Presently, I am using a Saffire firewire interface and the selection in RB appears as: "Saffire ASIO." Is there a way to look for MME in order to use that instead? Up until now I have not had any issues with latency. However, if I find myself tweaking to fix the crackling noise to the point where I will then hear noticable latency I want to plan another option.

In rb in the audio prefs choose mme then you should see the saffire mme/wdm drivers.

Is this for the newer version of Windows, or are their updates for, say, XP, to get the MME drivers working with a lower latency? i never heard of this, and would be interested in reading more about it...
Also, its "subject", not "subjuect".....  .....just returning the favor.....

I have raised and lowered the buffers in RB with no change.
But, thanks to the drag and drop feature I am using my Cakewalk DAW instead of RB. This works great and puts me in a program that I am better equipped to tweak around in for the meantime.

Hey RickeG,
I just installed 2010 a couple days ago and had a similar problem. I t wasn't bad ASIO drivers for me, since they worked fine in 2009.5. I fixed it by shutting off the Enable Input Monitor flag on the Audio driver. Is your flag set to on? Turn it off and I'm hoping your troubles will be resolved!

The default settings of Enable Input Monitoring should be unchecked. OFF.
Are you guys finding that it is defaulting to checked?
Or did you maybe check it yourselves?

Hi Mac, You're probably right about it being off by default. I don't think that most folks would expect enabling this function would produce this sort of initial result. Once it happens to you, you figure it out.  It wouldn't surprise me that the initial settings after the install were MME, so when I started setting up my ASIO drivers I started turning on ASIO features that would not be required when using MME. I regularly enable input monitoring in Sonar, and it doesn't produce this sort of result when simply turned on. Live and learn. I'll have to start reading the manual, before I flick a switch, not after. LOL Anyway, we'll have to wait and see if Rick fell into the same trap.
