I bootup BIAB and then plug the BIAB HD into the USB slot. Then the Autoplay window automatically pops up and spends quite a bit of time appearing to load up a bunch of styles and stuff. It takes quite a while.....my setup is one whereby BIAB is on my laptop and the RT and RD are being used from the HD. I'm sure there's probably a reason why the Autoplay does its thing....but does it really need to? Is there a way to save this wait time? Is there a toggle switch that simply needs to be checked somewhere? It just seems reasonable that there's no reason for the time it takes since all the RT and RD files are already on the HD, ready to be used.....I just don't want to wait for this to happen every time I bring up BIAB and plug the HD into the USB slot.

Thanks for any suggestions about this thingy,
cchallum

Right click on the usb drive icon in My Computer (or Computer) and click Open Auto Play. You can then tell Auto Play what to do for that drive when you plug it in. It sounds like it is opening up in Explorer. What you might want is to tell it to Do Nothing.
Good luck.

Any idea why it pops up? If I need only click cancel (and that definitely eliminate the thingy), that implies that the Autoplay popping up is possibly a bug? If not, what am I losing when I click cancel....anyone know?

Are you talking about the Auto Play in Windows (and if so which version) or something in BIAB. You said in the original post that you boot up BIAB and then plug the usb drive in. What happens when you just plug in the usb drive without BIAB running?
If you are talking about the Auto Play in Windows, then if you do the right click routine there should be a check box to tell it to do what you want every time, so if you tell it to do nothing, it will always do nothing. The usb drive will still be available in Windows and BIAB but Auto Play won't pop up. Auto Play in Windows exist to let you have the option(s) of what you want to do when you insert a usb drive, a cd or dvd or any other removable media format. It can be globally turned off if you want, but the right click method still works.

It is benign, Doc.

Autoplay is a "feature" of the Windows Operating System.

They've already told you how to turn it off, and anyone working with large audio files as we do should turn it OFF.

Not only is it annoying to have it pop up like that anytime you attach any storage that has certain types of media files on it, but it can cause interrupts in your streaming audio at the worst times, like when you are trying to record. This is one of the few "DAW Tweaks" that I still recommend doing, BTW. Windows has come a long way for us DAW users since the days when we even had to disable the Taskbar Clock in order to record audio without interruptions...

It isn't really an icon. If you open "My computer", then "explore" you should find a drive listed which will be labelled something like "UltrapakPLUS (F)" and if you then right-click on it there will be an option for autoplay. Clicking on that will open a list of the autoplay options.

Oops....hate to bring this back up but I thought I had done exactly as recommended (i.e., I did exactly as BillJohnson had suggested). I opened "My Computer", did "explore", clicked on Autoplay and it started the loading in thingy again, i.e., no options came up. When I canceled the running Autoplay window, then up came the screen that had several options, one of which was "Take No Action". That's the option I had clicked on earlier assuming it solved the problem. But I just re-plugged in the BIAB HD and the Autoplay popup came up and started its running process again....so I'm back where I started and the "Take No Action" was the only one of the several Autoplay choices that seemed appropriate.

I have Windows XP Professional....of course, clicking on Cancel when Autoplay starts running causes it to stop; I just don't want it to come up in the first place. Any other suggestions to keep it from popping up and start running once I plug the HD in?

Thanks in advance,
cchallum

The auto play only pops up when you first plug in the HD. It only happens that one time. If you leave the HD plugged in, shut down your machine and restart, I guarantee you that auto play will not happen again. Each time you unplug the HD, Windows recognizes a new device ... that's when auto play happens, since it's a media Windows thinks it has to do something with.

Then again, that's just on my machine ... Win XP Pro x64.

Cheers,
Mike

Disabling Autoplay in XP is not for the faint of heart, but can be done by anyone who can follow directions to the letter.

If not, then there is also the Tweak UI software, which can do it.

Here is an explanation:

http://ask-leo.com/how_do_i_really_disable_autoplay_in_windows_xp.html

If you do a websearch for "disable autoplay xp pro" you can research this out better, highly recommended before trying to do anything about it.

It can be done.

Probably plugged it into a different port on the usb.

I always put a sticker on everything in XP cause it often just quits working with something when it hits a new port. For example the Edirol midi usb thing always goes in the F port (for front on my laptops). That's an xp issue, and I had no end of grief with that for a while.
