Greetings,
I need to purchase a MIDI controller keyboard that is compatible with Windows 7. It appears on all of the keyboard manufacturers' web sites their support for their keyboards ends at Vista. Does anyone here have a MIDI keyboard that is functioning well with Windows 7? If so, please cite the model.

If the Vista driver works well, they may not need to release a Windows 7 version.

That's the trick. The 64 bit is the part I am concerned with. The scenario is this. I need to buy a handful of laptops and MIDI keyboards for a local school. I am finding that it is almost impossible to find a new laptop today that has 32 bit technology. Dell, HP/Compaq, Gateway all are running 7 as if XP and Vista had never existed.
The writeups on the MIDI keyboard manufacturer's web site, like M-Audio, state they support up to Vista 32 bit.
I am not too familiar with the effects of the 64bit. But, I have read some of the news out there in addition to this board and found there are problems with the jump from 32 to 64. I am not very confident on buying the quantity of MIDI keyboards and their accompanying laptops only to find nothing works. Has anyone seen any reviews on the new MIDI keyboards and their adapting to the 64 bit world?
I am a bit ticked off at these PC manufacturers for this. Whenever a new OS was introduced you had several months, if not at least a year, to buy the previous OS. For this version it was almost like you were not given the option any longer. Makes me glad that I bought my PCs when Vista was available. I have not had any problems using Vista SP2.

Totally agree with you. Keep in mind this is another example of the fact we musicians are a very tiny part of what people use PC's for so we get no love at all. Everything is done after the fact.
From what I've read, there is probably no problem with the keyboard working ok, most of what I've read about 64 bit problems involves software synths for sound but don't take my word for it.
Maybe you should buy just one setup, make sure it can be returned and test it out.

There are plenty of offerings that have the 32 bit Operating Systems installed on them.
Sounds like you are confusing the 64 bit capable processor with the Operating System.
You can find 32 bit OSs in either Vista, XP or Win7. The cpu can be 64 bit but the MIDI will fun fine when the OS is 32 bit running on a 64 bit capable cpu.

Depending on what you are looking for in a controller, I seriously don't think Windows 7 64 bit, or Vista 64 bit, would give you any problems.
The SOFTWARE that comes with it might, but I don't think the actual device will.
You can look for USB, which are often 'class compliant' or you might also look for some with a MIDI interface, which needs you to buy a midi interface, usually usb.
Now, if you're looking for one of those controllers that have all sorts of knobs, buttons and sliders, it may be a bit more difficult, since you need to configure those. If you're looking for a plain 61 key controller keyboard, I don't think you'll have any problem getting it to work with Win 7 64 bit.
From M-Audio's website, if you're interested in their Keystation keyboard controllers:
*The following class compliant (plug & play) devices can be used without installing any drivers under Windows 7 32-bit & 64-bit.
Connect your device and Windows will install the drivers automatically. If prompted to search for drivers, browse your computer and choose to search your main system drive (usually C:\) to find the drivers.

By the way, Mac, a lot of the newer computers that I am seeing now, especially with Windows 7, *are* shipping with the 64 bit OS, which in my opinion, is a good thing. It will move us...slowly but surely...towards a 64 bit computing environ where more and more applications are native 64 bit, which will make things faster.
Rickie, I've been running 32 bit OS and applications on a 64 bit CPU for a few years now, and since about a year ago, I've been running 64 bit OS on two 64 bit CPU machines, and have yet to have any kind of issue. I'm running Vista 64, and am very happy with it, and can't wait to get my copy of Win 7 64 (which I have running in RC form on another computer). All my computes, including my 1.6gHz Atom netbook are going to Windows 7, and only the netbook will be a 32 bit OS, everything else goes to 64!
Yay! More speed!

Gary, there are indeed some serious problems being reported with MIDI and 64 bit systems right now.
Time will tell if they get solved or not.
If you buy a 64 bit cpu with a 32 bit system, you are somewhat future-proofed and able to upgrade to 64 bit system some day should things get better for the music making world with the 64 bit Operating Systems, which I'm fully expecting them to do. I just can't say *when* that will come about...

Drivers are the only problem I've heard about also, but that's certainly a serious problem if you don't have a good one for a device you wish to use in 64-bit. My Tascam control surface, for example, does not fully function in 64-bit, according to other users who have tried, and will cause a BSOD if you don't turn it off before shutting down Windows. Before the current driver that has these problems, the previous driver caused clicks and pops if you used more than 3 GB of RAM, which is of course one of the main reasons why one would want to use a 64-bit OS, and users had to remove all but 2 GB of their RAM. This kind of annoyance does not exist with their 32-bit drivers for the same equipment.
The situation has recently changed a lot, though, for the better (except for Tascam).

Yeah, I have a Tascam US-428, a Roland GI-20 and a MIDISPORT 4x4... same drill.
I got a win7 64 bit OS computer for Christmas from my son. Now I'm trying to decide whether to use it basically for email and web browsing (overkill) and use the old 32 bit dual core/vista32 computer for music production....(for which I can still get drivers)
...or would it be better to sell my old devices on Craig's list while lots of people are still using XP and Vista, and replace them with new class-compliant input devices?
At present I'm thinking "sell and buy firewire for audio and a midisport 2x2 anniversary edition for MIDI" Music is my hobby, not my business. There is no disastrous workflow problem if I bog down in the changeover... the question boils down to when, not if, I will start pouring resources into 64 bit stuff. If I wait too long, there will be no resale market for the old stuff, and I'll have to spend new dollars for new equipment. If I jump now, I think I can find sell my old gear for enough to buy entry level class compliant at near- break even price

And that is a real big problem.
Because, with devices, it all boils down to, "Drivers, Drivers, Drivers..."
An example is to be found right here on these forums, people were complaining about their E-MU 1X1 and 2X2 MIDI devices not working right with PGMusic products recently.
Andrew just informed us today that E-MU is about to release updated drivers for those two.
That tells me that the fault was in the driver coding and not in the pgmusic products.

If you go to the M-Audio discussion board they have a compilation of complaints reaching back to the release of Vista in 64bit on one thread. They do have several drivers updated. However, none for the keystation of which I am most interested in.

I bought a Bose L1 Model 2. Pricey. It has a usb to to TonePort connector. It just works. With XP, Vista and Linux. No hassles. Once into the Toneport your set ch 4/5 to handle it and get access to the presets, the global presets, compressions etc. The only thing is don't unplug it in Vista while Band in a Box is running. It just locks it up and you have to kill it. But no lingering effects. It also runs all other audio and although you get warnings about found new hardware, just ignore them and bang, everything works fine.
Same thing with the Edirol MidiSport Usb to Midi device. Plug it in and go. No installation other than do Opts, Midi Setup inside Band in a Box. It also is bi-directional, I have not tried that yet. I suspect it's like the output side, it just works.
That makes life much easier. And the Edirol Midi thing works 100% with the Ketron SD2. So I have no audio issues, no midi issues, MME drivers, no latency, and that pulls off a level of complexity.
Many of the new people that show up here spend weeks frustrated by their setups. From inferior computers, to old devices, to the fact they muck with stuff that should be left alone. Sometimes the best advice would be to run a routine and say "hey dude/dudette your system will work fine with a standard setup, we determined you have this system, and we will enable MME/ the proper audio settings, the Dxi, and please play the demos, and we setup your input devices and if you have a cheap mic try singing or playing along and later, once you are aware of what's going on if your system does not work, click this I'm a dummy button and we will restore your system to the detected best setup and you restart the computer and band in a box and go back to having fun.

Well, its not that simple to call.
Class Compliant drivers may not have the ability to exploit the feature set of a lot of different devices and that's when it becomes necessary to write your own drivers to suit the target device.
One good example would be ASIO. There is no microsoft Class Compliant ASIO driver.
And there is no guarantee that Class Compliant guarantees proper operation, either. l've seen a few problems crop up from time to time with them.

Sorry, to bump this but it seems that my old Fatar SL-760 controller has finally died of unexplained circumstances. I need a very simple controller , semi weighted, obviously velocity sensitive , that should go without saying nowadays. 61 keys should cut it. I do run my DAW under Win 7 64.
I'm hoping that by now some of you have come to a satisfactory conclusion i.e. found a cheap 61 keyboard controller like the Behringer or M-Audio that can run under Windows 7 64. At the very least I guess if they have the standard midi jack and be externally powered that should work as well.
I have Edirol USB driven midi interface break out boxes that work fine under Win 7 64 but dont think I"ve seen an inexpensive keyboard controller by Edirol or Roland.

Edirol USB MIDI adapter should work fine with any keyboard.
Velocity sensitive is easy, it's the polyphonic aftertouch that gets ya!
I hate recommending controllers; one persons feel is not right for someone else. For that matter an old Alesis QS6 can have the right feel, but do you need other features? ..or just looking for feel and note info (including aftertouch and velocity) ?
Do you need any sounds from it?

Xtra Styles PAKs are styles that work with the UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, or Audiophile Edition of Band-in-a-Box® 2025 (or higher). Xtra Styles PAKs 1-21 includes 3,700 styles (and 35 MIDI styles)!
The XPro & Xtra Styles PAKs are not included in any Band-in-a-Box® package.
