Hello

I'm using BIAB 2010 for a song that has a guitar playing an E (and an A) chord in bar 2 like this: E,E A,A
Then in bar 6 I have: A,A E,E

I'm a self-taught guitarist (and everything else I know about music which is probably quite minimal compared to you pros), when I play this on my guitar I play the E in bar 2 in a lower octave and the one in bar 6 in a higher octave.

So, the E chords sound different in BIAB which presents the same E chord sound in both bars 2 and 6.

If you're familiar with guitar, I'm playing the first E at the nut and the second E as a bar-gram at the 5th (A) fret.

Is there any easy way to make BIAB play the E chord in bar 6 higher?

If the only way is to edit the style or something, I'll never get it done. I have tried to figure out how to use the style maker and I guess I just don't have the smarts to figure it out -- not even when I read the manual which I have -- several times.

Any help would be much appreciated.

RealTrack guitar, you're likely stuck with what it gives you.

MIDI guitar part, you could try Freezing and then transposing the notes at that bar, one at a time...

I think I may have tried what you suggested. I built the song in BIAB, so it was full on MIDI. I went to the editable notation at bar 6 and "drew" in the notes for the higher E chord. I played it back and it didn't sound too good. Is that what you meant by freezing and then transposing the notes at that bar?

*If you don't freeze the notes, when you hit play or close the song and reopen it, the BiaB style generator will create new notes where your work once was.

To move a chord up an octave, it likely would be a lot easier to use the PianoRoll window, where you can select multiple notes and drag them at once.

Your problem is not that the two chords you describe are an octave above one another, though. They are also different chord voicings.

At the open E, the notes, from lowest to highest, would be E, B, E, G#, B, E

At the fifth fret, the E would be the open C shape, with the barre finger placed at the 4th fret and the voicing would be, again from lowest pitched note to highest, G#(usually not played), E, G#, B, E, G#.

Oh, yes, I see. You're right, of course. I hadn't thought about the voicings. I'll need to put in all te notes. How do I "freeze" and enter the notes?

I'm going to bed -- old-timer thing I gess -- so I'll pick back up tomorrow. Thanks for always being so helpful.

You could take the chord and stick it on the soloist part if your are not using it. Cut and paste. Transpose the whole track up. Just leave the one chord.

The voicings chosen are dependent on the style, and some styles will use multiple voicings, just as a human player might.

I am unaware of a way to "force" BIAB to use higher voicings. That would be a cool feature.

I just wanna say that when I posted my message last night (early this morning?) I didn't realize there were other posts after the initial one that started the thread.

I navigated to the thread via the Search Tool, and I didn't realize that when you click a search result, it shows only the one post. I thought theglide's post went unanswered, so I put I put in my two (devalued American) cents.

It actually might be a good wish-list item, JC.

I edit the Style file by transposing the patterns up one octave, then save under a new name. At least, for MIDi styles. Never tried that with a RealStyle as of yet, dunno if its possible, likely not. I take advantage of the fact that we don't need all realstyles in order to sound "real" -- hiding a MIDI track or two along with the RealTracks and RealDrums usually serves to make the MIDI track sound that much more realistic, especially for certain hammered instruments, like Piano.

If the guitar part is actually the BB Guitar or a melody part, you can edit the guitar chords in the BB edit program. Just add the voicings or the higher notes on top of the notes you have (upper register of the staff) for the chords and delete the lower ones. Be sure not to add too many notes as this will muddle the guitar sound. Just try adding one note and deleting one note at a time and see how is sounds. This should give you a higher pitched guitar sound. If you don't know what the upper notes should be, you can use BB Chord Finder and it will give you several voicings of the same chord. Hope this helps.
