Greetings Forum,
I record an electronic wind controller, direct in using cables and no mics. I can run the left and right output into a splitter to a stereo 1/8 jack and plug it directly into my laptop mic input. Is this a good way to do this or would there be any advantages to using an interface. Thank you for your help.
* I updated my RB to 2b but when I open the program it still says version 2010 (2). Is this correct?

Your laptop's mic jack is 1) Not Stereo and 2) at the wrong level and impedance to use with the Line Output of the MIDI device. It is also notoriously noisy and uses a lousy A-D converter with a jittery clock, which isn't recommended for serious music making endeavors.
So, yes, look into a better quality USB audio device for that laptop, one that has both stereo mic, instrument AND line input on it. Typically you can use one or the other but not all six at once, BTW, since the device has only L and R stereo inputs.
I don't know where people got the idea that a hardware device can be called an "interface"...
