I have a reasonable knowledge re above but am not sure about setup in RB2010
My system is running 100% and I have created stunning Audio backtracks in BIAB which I have opened and done a basic mix in Real Tracks 2010. Saved as .seq files
Can you help with basic vocal setup RT? Is it as simple as it seems? I doubt it.
I've fiddled a bit and and got some pretty horrific vocal recordings. I under stand logic about levels, EQ, recording dry/with effects etc. I'm using a Shure SM 58. I know it is essentially a mic for stage work but its all that I have at this stage.
I am a professional singer so my voice is my instument
I've looked at Audiominds site and find it helpful

What do you mean by 'pretty horrific recordings?'

Describe problem better

Distortion sometimes, low quality. Not as impressive as my audio backtracks
Also in RB all I seem to have is the VU meter to monitor levels? Or do I use Fast Track pro for levels as well?

The RB VU meter should be enough.

it should be showing movement on the Lefthand set of VU meters if your Recording Properties for the soundcard are set up right for the Mic Input.

It should be hovering and peaking at around the -6dB mark when you sing loudly into the mic.

Sometimes the room you are in imparts its own sound to the mic due to reflections, standing waves and the like. We usually don't notice this when in the room live, but recordings have a way of letting us hear that as if it was accentuated. Usually, more padded things in the room can help.

Thanx Mac
Ive just discovered some pretty self explanatory instructions in the DX/Vst button on RB. I think they will definitely help. Reverb/Peak limiter/10band EQ/Compression etc
Txs again
Also read the Pro audio manual re settings
Shoulda done all this first! Duh!

Another 'feature' is the track categories - by right-clicking the track you can select a category such as male vocals and RB will load some effects with a suggested starting point (if you enable the checkbox in the resulting popup). May save time if you are new to this, but remember they are just starting points.

In the DX window you can bypass each individual effect to see what effect it is having on the sound

Txs rharv.
If I select track categories and male vocal, would I record dry or with effects?
Saw your website Music Mastering. What a cool idea

I always record dry so I have the opportunity and freedom to make adjustments further down the line, timewise..

Thanks for stopping by the website

In RealBand when pressing Options thenPrefs then Audio I get the setup page for Asio or MME drivers
Audio driver type-I set Asio
Next to that there are 2 checkboxes
Enable input monitoring and..
Allow IM effects in recording

Also further down ....Full duplex(record and playback at same time)
When I use them my vocals AND backtrax are recorded into the input causing distortion
Hmmmm

You still need to go into the Windows sound mixer and indicate your recording source. If it is set to stereo mix (or what-u-hear), then everything on the audio side gets mixed together. You need to select line-in, or wav file, or microphone, or one of the others to just record that source.

Well I bought the Fast Track USB ProTools Essential and returned it. Had nothing but problems and never did get it running.

Waited FORTY FIVE MINUTES on hold for tech support...which is outrageous in this day and age...and hung up. Among other things, it ships with v. 8.2 of pro tools but when it won't work and you go into the help pages, it states that you need v. 8 or 8.1 if you are running XP SP3.

Well a HUGE percentage of the installed base of PCs is running on XP SP3 so the box SHOULD NOT state that it is XP compatible!

Oh, and the installation DVD wouldn't even open on 2 of the 3 computers I tried it on.

Oh, and when I tried to D/L the latest Fast Track driver as recommended in the manual, I got repeated "data invalid" errors on 1 of 3 computers I tried.

Other than that, it was perfect. (-:

The above is only a heads up and only from my personal experience. Results may vary.

Best,
Jim

Plotz, in M-Audio hardware, you need to access the mixer window in your system tray. There should be a small M or something there and that will get 'er done.

Jim, M-Audio stuff is about as solid as you can find. If you have some issues with setup give us a detailed description and maybe we can help, there a ton of M-Audio folks around here.

The Fast Track Pro and its drivers are known to work and play well with pgmusic products.

I have a good buddy who uses one exclusively with BiaB, PT and RealBand, all the time. On a Toshiba laptop running the dreaded Vista, no less.

To be fair, he *did* have initial problems, which involved bringing in Toshiba support to find a few settings that had to be tweaked, but once he learned the new hardware and software, how to properly install things and how to connect the device properly to USB -- and disconnect -- he's been up and running smoothly for months.

One thing about USB devices that he did not realize -- you have to connect the USB device and have it recognized by the Operating System *BEFORE STARTING UP THE HOST PROGRAM (BiaB, PT, RB, etc.) or they will not be able to "see" the device. We can't start the program and then hook up the USB sound device, that's an iffy situation.

As I said Robh...my experience was only mine. But whatever the difficulties may have been, a 45 minute wait for tech support is pretty outrageous.

And this is only from memory but I am quite sure the documentation said that ony ProTools versions 8 and 8.1 work with XP SP3 but the unit shipped with v. 8.2. Why in the world would they ship an application that won't work on 80% of the installed based of XP????

And the DVD wouldn't open on a pc that opened other DVDs.

And attempting to d/l the latest drivers returned an "Invalid Data" error message...3 times.

Genuine THANKS for the offer to help but I have returned the device.

I am genuinely glad that others have not had these problems...but I am just reporting the facts of my trial of the device.

Best,
Jim

Jim i can appreciate the frustration, however you sent the product back, and still never gave detailed unformation of the problem. We can not see your system, but many of us have long histories of working with this stuff. I have had M-Audio products for 7 years now and had nothing but praise for it. Still i would have welcomed the opportunity to really help you get the device up and running but you have to help us help you. 45 minutes of waiting to get a product working you will literally spend years enjoying is not much to ask if you really want to do this.

If someone has DVD issues, and product issues, and download issues, the first thing we have to suspect is that you have Computer issues. So sending the product back and ordering something else might not work. Getting to the bottom of the issues would make more sense to most of us.

Anyway when you decide what equipment you want to use come on back, but we still won't be able to help if you do not give us something to work with. I have help dozens of folks get up and running iover at the Cakewalk forums. The common demoninator is pilot error. There is usually some small detail that they do not understand that is keeping them from getting started. Those who persist find joy, those who throw their hands up in the air, do not.

I do not say this to further frustrate or certainly put you down. I truely want to help. I just for fun downloaded the drivers, they save to HD perfectly. I suspect you have some issues with your system, but appologize if I am wrong. Respectfully Rob

Hi Plotzie,

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem with my M-Audio Fasttrack Ultra card: If I check both "Enable input monitoring" and
"Allow IM effects in recording", I get distorted playback and recording.

What did you do to solve it?

Very grateful for any hints or tips!

Regards
Bjorn

It seems his issue was that all tracks were getting recorded when he enabled the IM recording.

This would indicate the M-Audio mixer was set to monitor mix with all sound being routed together and looping back thru.
Inside the main mixer (Check taskbar lower right or control panel to find it) there is a setting for what gets recorded. Set it to just the inputs being used, not the whole mix.

A workaround would be to uncheck the 'record IM' box. Then save the effects you are using by clicking the 'save group' button in the DX FX area. You will still hear the effects while recording if you leave the allow input monitoring box checked.
Then after recording use the 'Load group' button to put the exact same effects on the track after recording. The added benefit of this is that you can still adjust those effects later on (add more EQ or less reverb, etc.)

It's the preferred method here.. being stuck with a set of effects has caused me to have to re-record tracks to make them acceptable.

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
