I need/want something to examine and edit a .mid file:
NEEDS Quick and easy Simply drag and drop midi to examine and play. Show ALL the midi info in a .mid file on a piano roll or table view. Play through Windows Midi Win 10 64 bit compatible
WANTS Record from Keyboard Input Allow me to assign a VST
DON'T WANT: DAW
I have tried over a half dozen "Free" midi editors Do a Goggle for "best free Midi Editors" and none of them meet my needs. I am willing to pay. There must be something out there I am missing. What do you use?

I believe you are using the wrong search term. Instead of looking for a MIDI editor, try a search for MIDI sequencer. +++ HERE +++ is a list of 11 MIDI sequencers. Perhaps one of them will work.

I have heard that you can download the Free Cakewalk DAW, and use a filter to get rid of all the audio and be left with a sequencer that is similar to the discontinued Master Tracks Pro. MTPro is my all-time favorite, and it still works with Win11. It was the second best piece of software I ever bought (second to BiaB of course) Notes ♫

Ya, I have looked at just about all these options and they are not meeting my needs/wants.
I have looked for something to manage my midi like this for years. Actually, best for me has been midiyodi, but it has recently been failing me.
Reaper handling of MIDI is great. And does all I really need. The problem is when I work in Reaper I generally have very complex arrangments with many tracks (audio and midi). The problem is if I am just doing midi screening while in the middle of a big project I run the risk of messing thing up which can compromise my overall project. So I was hoping for somenthing "off line" to work on midi and move it into the DAW when it is cleaned up.
So if an off line solution does not exist I believe I can adjust my workflow in Reaper to isolate the midi track when needed. Reaper does permit multiple projects open similtaneously. Also I have recently configure Reaper to quickly open a default screen which allows any number of templates to be selected. The "midi only" template will pop up ready to go in seconds. This should fix this issue for me.
Thanks

Master Tracks Pro may come back from the dead. You didn't hear that from me. Well, you can't always not get what you don't want (to paraphrase Mick & Keith). MOTU's free Performer Lite gives you 16 tracks & does everything you want — many never use the Audio portion. There is a catch, however: You must own a piece of MOTU hardware to obtain a license from them. It can be of any age: Register it on their web site and request a license. Performer Lite Otherwise, there's always Digital Performer—ain't free, however. Performer, the MIDI Only version was discontinued decades ago and was Mac only. Digital Performer

Yeah... I'm thinking that your best midi editor is going to be in a DAW of some sort.
Check around with a few of the DAW forums..... join them and go in and ask about the features you want. I know that some DAWs tend to be more in tune with doing certain things than others are.... each one has it's strengths and weaknesses..... just find one that is strong in the midi world.
You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

Cubase hands down has the most extensive MIDI editing capabilities with Cakewalk running a close second.

For MIDI GM files, used to use Cakewalk until v7 came along and changed hardware requirements. Switched to MasterTracks and been using it ever since for most of the tasks I need (cutting, remixing, re-arranging, note editing, embedding DMX/SysEx/CC in control tracks). If I run into the 48-track limit I'll use another DAW, usually Reaper to hold the tracks but continue to edit with MasterTracks. After two decades or so I'm accustomed to the workflow and the results for live performance files.
I have a turdload of generative tools but BIAB/RB are still possibly THE monsters to beat for a full composition or anything that you don't want to sound like it was processed by an automatic weapon.
