I'm getting an audible click at the start and end of my punch-ins. Is there an option to smooth the edges, or somehow get rid of the noise?
Thanks everyone!

Ricky, I might be wrong, but it sounds like you are trying to punch-in mid-phrase. I haven't used punch-in in 2010 but in 2009.5 it worked fine for me but I always made sure that I punched-in from a location in the track where there was silence until the next location where there was silence. To punch-in mid-phrase, you need to be able to cross-fade otherwise I have discovered that clicks can occur when the first recording doesn't quite match up with the second recording.
If you are using punch-in from a silent location to another silent location and you are getting a click, then that could be something in BIAB or your computer setup that needs investigating. Does your mic setup record much in the way of background noise?

Thanks Noel. The punches I have had trouble with are going from silent location to silent location. I haven't had the problem every time I've used the punch-in feature. Maybe half the time. Once I have the problem, it is like that for all the punch-ins so I resort to re-recording the entire song. I thought maybe there was something I was accidentally turning on or off that was causing the problem.
Thanks again for your help Noel.

Ricky,
If it's silent location to silent location, there's no need to re-sing the song. Save the audio and load it into Realband. You'll see the clicks as spikes. Select the region of the spike (gray it out by dragging the mouse) and then use "right-click >> audio effects >> gain change" to reduce the volume of the click to zero.
To be honest, if this were me, I'd be assembling/producing the whole recording in Realband once I had a workable backing created in BIAB.
Hope this helps, Noel

Use RealBand to record, if you can.
I don't do punchins, saving that for the direst of emergency circumstances.
Instead, I will record several vocal tracks (or any track for that matter) one at a time, from beginning to end.
After the tracking phase is done, mistakes and all, I then use the power of mixing/editing to make what we call a Compilation Track or "Comp" of the several tracks by listening to each track play with the backing one at a time and selecting which areas are to be avoided, which are good, while jotting notes on a pad.
Once all that is clear, I then use Audio Volume Envelopes drawn from PianoRoll windows for each audio track to turn all other tracks down while turning the one up to the appropriate level. This has no pops or clicks and is seamless in sound.
Advantages are that there are no cut 'n paste type edits with their problems of placement, zero-crossing points and artifacts, plus, ALL takes are still preserved, it is nondestructive editing at its best, in case I find I need to go back and change a section or the like.
Comping is part of the bidness.
A large part.

Hey Mac. Thanks for the great info. I understand what comping is but I always thought that you cut and pasted the parts into one main track. That seemed like more of a headache than punching in. The studios I have been to have all punched-in instead of comping but that could possibly be due to time and money factors.
I really want to understand how to do this because it may be better for me than punching in due to my poor recording situation. I looked through the tutorial on the Piano Window and it didn't really help explain what you mean by "Audio Volume Envelopes". Also, I am wondering how you actually do the comping. Do you highlight the areas of tracks you don't need and set the gain to 0?
I am totally clueless but really want to understand this. Any help you and others can provide would be wonderful.
Thanks so much for your time and help.

Okay, Ricky, I'll try to find the time to set up a real tutorial session on that.
It is time, because a lot of people seem to have difficulty with it at first.

Actually I don't have trouble with clicks during a punchin. The trick is to delete the area to be punched in, set you cursor about 2 or 3 bars before the punchin area, click on rec and then do the part. I goes in like an original recording. Fast and easy for me.
And the guys are right. The BIAB audio track is very limited, which may be why you're getting the clicks in the first place. I only use that track to import an audio track that was done in RB/PTW.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info Russell. I wasn't deleting the area before re-recording. That made the difference. Thank you very much.
