I have a customer who has used BiaB and my styles to have quite a few of his songs published in Nashville. He wrote to me a couple of years ago.

He didn't give details, and I don't know if a major star picked any of them up, but when he wrote he considered it a success story.

A musical instrument shop in my area has a studio in the back and has produced many demo cds for local artist using BIAB for backing tracks. I don't know if they still use it but I can't imagine why they would stop, especially if they have remained with the most current versions of BIAB. I have heard a few of them and they did a very good job of mixing. So I guess in short the answer to your questions would be yes.
As for the advice, I would say don't be afraid to try anything yourself in BIAB. You will find limitations to be sure (yours and the programs), but at the rate most studios want for an hour session you can save a bundle by DIY and really learn the program in the process. Just get very friendly with the Save button when experimenting.
Good luck.

I've done it, many times. Here's four that were received well in Nashville:

http://www.itrstudio.com/deana.mp3 - all BIAB and harmonizer on vocal.

http://www.itrstudio.com/angie.mp3 - real lead guitar and real harmonies.

http://www.itrstudio.com/rodney.mp3 - all BIAB and real lead guitars.

http://www.itrstudio.com/distance.mp3 - real fiddles and real harmonies

The first three songs were done before the BIAB "Real" stuff was available.

Don't overlook the fact that the first three of Harvey's songs up there were done with MIDI instruments only.

And he once told us that they were provided by none other than the VSC MIDI synth, too!

Apparently, the Beyer M400 is identical to the Beyer Soundstar MK II. For inexpensive (under $200) condensor mics, I like the MXL V67, the MXL 960, and the Joe Meeks JM47.

There are only certain points in the first song that I can tell you were using the TCHelicon. But those were the best harmonies using it I've heard. What kind of hardware were you using for your mix down? How did you get the voices so clear? There's still a lot I've got to learn.

Hi Harvey,
I really enjoyed listening to your songs. They sound excellent; very pitchable recordings in my opinion.

It was actually a Digitech Harmonizer (the first model they made) and I simply played the chords on the one octave keyboard. One of the tricks I used was to play the chord sometimes a 1/2 step low and switch midway to the right chord, creating a "slide" into the right note. This gave the background vocals a little more natural feel. I panned the background vocals about 20& left and right. I watch levels and instrument placements very carefully to leave a hole in the arrangement and mix for the main voice to stay up front. And of course some light compression on the main vocal, plus reverb.
