I have used this service to "digitally fingerprint" my songs a while back. Does anyone know much about it? Is it as good as a copyright? Any suggestions, advice or alternatives welcome.

They disappeared a few months ago.
I asked over at motagator (where I first heard of them) and was told their emails were not getting returned either.
Last I checked the site was down too.

Unless you have your copyright registered at the LOC, I don't believe you can file an infringement suit. The LOC will expedite your registration -- for about $500. I can't see any any infringement lawsuits that are worth anything anyway -- the legal fees are just too exorbitant. Now, if you have LOC registration you can recover legal fees -- if the other party doesn't go bankrupt.
In short, you really don't have any protection no matter what you do -- unless you have a song that is making big, big bucks.

Correct. There is no need to pay anyone to do this for you. It's only $35 for a (reasonably) easy online filing, and you can register any number of songs as a collection, via upload, with that single copyright registration fee. http://www.copyright.gov/eco/eco-tutorial.pdf

The draw was that for $50 melodyguard would let you submit songs for your lifetime.. and keeep them on file with an 'approved digital timestamp' that was recognized by LOC
but, alas, they are no longer here so good luck with that.
The best choice is always the official copyright path, but it can get rather costly if you write a lot. $35 doesn't sound bad, but if you need it more than a few times a year it adds up.

In the Netherlands you can register your work at the tax office. Not that they keep your songs on file, but they seal your cd and/or your sheet music in a time-stamped envelope. This way you can prove you had a certain song at a certain time. Best of all: they do it for free  (well, for free.... with our tax-rates......)

I have some stuff I need you to run down to the tax office for me ..
The time-stamped envelope doesn't work so well here.. We can get that service rather inexpensively here also, but it hasn't proven to be very strong in court.

Do not believe in the "self-addressed stamped envelope, registered mail" scheme if you live in the US. Such won't make it to deposition, or even past the first attorney. You can legally append, "© by xxxxx xxxxxx, all rights reserved" on any song you have written as soon as you have written it. This is not the same thing as having registered your song with the US Copyright office, which should be the next step at some point. As already pointed out, registration of copyright is not a guarantee that your work will not get stolen, but should such a fiendish thing happen, you are in a much better place if you have the registration. Those wishing to save money on the copyright fees in the US should look into the "compilation" copyright. Be careful with that one, though, as certain rights are abrogated as compared to the single copyright. I'm not a lawyer, I've just been involved with songs and copyrights for years. Well, decades. Finding out copyright info for the US has never been easier. The webwsite now covers it ALL. There is a well=-organized FAQ, also. This is where you should always go to find out the plain truth.
