I am putting together a cd of some original songs for family and friends. I want to make the CD package look as "professional" as possible. I will give myself credits for vocals, acoustic guitar, banjo, and bass. But if I add a realtrack, like resonator, how do I handle that? If I just don't mention it I might be giving the impression that I am playing that also.

What do other folks do when using real tracks? Credit the instrument to PG Music maybe?

thanks
m

Hi m,

While PGMusic does list the names of the various artists recorded for the RealTracks in the memo section of the RealTracks picker, I don't think it is fair to list their names on a production done by means of the BiaB "robot".

What I do is to credit the software.

"All other tracks created with Band-in-a-Box software made by PGMusic" www.pgmusic.com

On CDs, I also have downloaded the free logos provided by PGMusic and place them in the artwork, usually on the back of the jewel case where such things are found.

They are webpublished by PGMusic for that express purpose and can be found here:

PGMusic Presskit Images and Logos

I have found that to be "enough" -- those in the know understand, those not in the know don't seem to be affected either way and perhaps a few will follow the link and learn about the software, good thing.

Almost everything I do is performed and produced by myself using various software--BIAB, soft synths, DAW, mastering suites, etc.--with the additon of guitar, bass, and other instruments. In the past I have given myself credit for composition, performance, production, and, in the cases of BIAB and Reason in particular, programming--without listing the devices or software.

Is this adequate? I have said in the past, and still hold, that I consider BIAB a co-composer, as much of what I do is inspired and shaped by the program. Yet, it is under my direction. BIAB's output is rarely an end product. (I have one composition(?)* which I created in BIAB, ported into Reason and very lightly edited. But I consider it mine.)

IMO, BIAB is a secret weapon. I know of few (hedging; can't think of any, actually) professional artists who list software in their album credits. I'd like to do right ethically, but also don't want to give away any secrets.

Opinions, please.

R.

You can do it whichever way YOU want to do it, R.

On the CDs I sell at BiaB gigs, I put what I wrote above.

There are other productions where use of BiaB is not mentioned at all, though.

For example, doing a demo song for someone else so they can try to plug their song, or just to share with others, it is up to them what goes on their label.

There are other times when it is not apropos to mention even the live musicians, much less the softwares used. Examples might be Underscores, Jingles, Commercials, Industrial Musics, etc. Most of the time nobody cares about such info with these productions.
