I have folders from different programs that have VST plugins in them. Should they all be moved to one main VST folder? If so, is there a common location for such a folder? Thanks.

Ricky. On my computer all the VST's seem to automatically go into a folder called, "Stienberb/VST. Unless you happen to have VST's with identicle names it's best to keep these (DXi's too) in one place.

All my plugins are in H:\Program Files\Steinberg\VstPlugIns. (H is my boot drive). Some install programs will look for that folder and ask if this is where you want them. I think it's because Steinberg developed the technology. Hope this helps.

they don't have to be.

For example, you might want to put only the VSTs that you wish to use with a certain program into a folder where you point only that program to avoid clutter.

You might also have some VSTs that work well in one program and not in another. Putting those into a folder for just the program where they work from eliminates them bringing errors in the other program.

Most VST filesizes (check the size first) are small enough to consider putting a copy of it in two different places, too.

The important thing to remember is that if you move the .dll file, the DAW program will not be able to find it. The effect will have to be removed and re-installed inside the program.

I let the self installing plugins (executables) go where they want to. I put all other dll's in a C:\VSTs\ folder.. makes them easy to find when I need them.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome
