Hi there, I have Band in a Box 2008, through Vista platform. I've made some audio rec over BIAB track, all sounded nice, than I wanted to reduce the audio track volume, so I went to audio/edit audio/adjust output level of audio (quick). A new window popped up, showing the volume 127. I typed in 75, that i left the pan centered, and than when I hit playback, I se that Not only the audio sound was lost but also the BIAB track. No sound at all. Checked the sound card config, the mixer, I even did a reset to factory setting. No luck. All the other midi applications on my comp are working just fine..Power tracks as well. Just BIAB -no sound whatsoever. Anybody there have ever had this problem? Please let me know if anyone have a solution.Any assistance is much appreciated!!!

Can you hear any MIDI sounds when in BiaB?

Is only the Audio track the "no sound"?

TIP: When an Audio track is attached to a BiaB songfile, there will be two files with the same name but two different suffixes in the corresponding folder: "mysong.xgu" for the BiaB file and "mysong.wav" is the Audio track. Look for the audio track. It may have somehow gotten moved to another folder or it may have gotten renamed such that it does not match the songfile title and thus won't load with it anymore.

"I wanted to reduce the audio track volume, so I went to audio/edit audio/adjust output level of audio (quick). A new window popped up, showing the volume 127. I typed in 75, that i left the pan centered, and than when I hit playback, I se that Not only the audio sound was lost but also the BIAB track. No sound at all.No Midi , No Audio, Nothing!

If using the VSC DXi, open it and check all Volume faders, sometimes they get turned down all by themselves. Especially check the Master Fader.

If that doesn't do it, check your soundcard software mixer control applet panel to see that nothing has been turned down or muted, especially the Master.

If that isn't it, try Options -> Return to Factory Settings, button number 2

Guys (and Gals),
I was going to post the same problem (I think) and saw this topic. I lost my sound yesterday after recording an audio file into BB 2008.5. I'm using Vista. I can hear MIDI and wav files in other apps but nothing in BB.
I've checked all the MIDI and audio settings, tried it with VST/DXI and without it, checked and reset the VST/DXI panel (master volume all the way up, all sliders up), checked the Window control panel volume settings, hit the return to factory settings option - I even reinstalled BB 2008.5 and VST/DXI from the disks! Still no sound.
I've been doing BB for 4-5 years - although this was the first time I recorded audio directly into BB since I switched to a Vista laptop. I'm especially puzzled that the sound would persist after a new install.
Any ideas?

Have you used the live help?

Are you sure other midi is working outside the software? What is that set to in the Control Panel. Go back and ensure that's the same in Band in a Box.

The UAC settings on Vista have caused a lot of grief, shut it off.

The Dxi, once envoked, has a control panel of its own and should be in the first slot. After it's there make sure the volume sliders are all at 127, for some strange reason they get set to zero sometimes.

If you plug and unplug other stuff, always put USB devices no matter what, into the same usb port. That is another Microsoft bug the size of a tropical cockroach.

Band in a Box produces two sets of output.

1. Sound, like playing a cd, RealDrums, realtracks, and audio recording.
2. Midi sounds.

Try an all midi file or all Realtracks file.

Normally installing and uninstalling is a total waste of time.

In Vista some things won't work at all under system reset, etc. It's the UAC that stops it from working.

I think MS should upgrade me to Windows 7 and give me money for the grief Vista caused.

The other thing is once you get a working setup write down all the settings so you have them for later.

NOTE : The VSC anything Dxi or not will not work in 64 bit mode. If you thought it did it was something else.

Do you know if you have the wav file still attached to the audio audio slot? Maybe this could be causing the strange behavior.

Hi Dave,

A new install does not newly install everything. The "intrface.bbw" file and one other file that is associated with your soundcard settings is not overwritten on a new install. This is a feature intended to keep your personal settings intact when upgrading the program.

But should one of those two key files become corrupted, well then you would have to deal with that.

The fastest and best way to deal with that problem is the Options -> Return to Factory Settings command, but in the case of no sound, you should try hitting the SECOND button there, that resets the soundcard and MIDI output drivers also.

It is also a very good idea to reboot the computer, too.

Give that a try.

Thanks for your suggestions.
Unfortunately, I've checked and done every one of them with no results, and I just did them all again to make sure
To recap, I'm using 32-bit Windows Vista on a fairly new Sony VAIO laptop
UAC is disabled
Wav fles and MIDI files play under other software, just not in BB
Under BB options (BB 2008.5), I hit "return to all factory settings, including MIDI"
MIDI settings are: NO MIDI INPUT, Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth and VSC DXI checked (same as always - I also tried running it with DXI not checked, and it makes no difference)
In VSC DXI panel, master volume is all the way up, all sliders all the way up, all boxes set to receive, and I've hit reset to make sure
Windows Volume control shows BB volume all the way up
Sound card settings all good
No audio file in BB - I'm opening up files with no audio, opening new files, etc - no audio showing in audio edit window
Q: I lost the sound after plugging a microphone into the microphone port of the laptop to record an audio file - it was the first time I had ever done that in BB (usually record in RealBand - BTW, sound is still fine in RealBand) - can you think of a way recording an audio file in BB could have disabled the sound? That's when it happened, anyway. Could it have something to do with the registry?

I have lost the BIAB audio a couple of times - once on a gig. Midi was OK but my RealDrums were not heard. Other apps played audio fine. I tried all sorts of things such as the Factory Reset, changing audio drivers, etc with no luck. The only thing that got the BIAB audio running again was a System Restore. I think Vista creates a Restore point every time the system is booted by default.

Addendum to my last post: Now I notice that sometimes when I open Windows Volume Control - apparently at random - the BB slider is all the way down to zero - but when I raise it back way up, I still don't hear anything. Also, sometimes the BB slider is black until I click on it.
I wonder if the Volume Control panel is accurate when it shows the volume at zero. I wonder if for some reason BB is simply not responding when I pull the slider up. In other words, it appears BB is muted, despite what the Windows Volume Control panel shows. (None of the instruments are set on mute or solo, though, and I can see them playing on the screen when I hit play.)
(See above post for all the things I checked to try to get sound)

Hello Johnny,

Check what build of Band-in-a-Box you have (Help | About Band-in-a-Box). If it is not 2008 build 265, install the patch, and that should fix the problem:
http://www.pgmusic.com/support_windowsupdates.htm#265

If you already have build 265, you could consider this (somewhat mysterious) solution. However please note that editing the registry must be done at your own risk since making a mistake can cause serious problems with your computer. So you would only want to do this if you are confident that you understand the process and are comfortable making the change. You should back up the registry first.

1. Open the Registry Editor (Start menu, and type regedit)
2. Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\LowRegistry\Audio\PolicyConfig
3. Expand PropertyStore. Right-click on PropertyStore and click Find... type bbw.exe. It should find a key that looks SOMETHING LIKE this: ac6eg14e_0
4. With that selected, look in the right-hand pane under that data column and check that it has the path to your Band-in-a-Box application, for example \bb\bbw.exe. You may need to make the Data column wider to see the path.
5. Delete that ONE key, and press F3 to search again. If there is another key under PropertyStore that also contains the same path (e.g. \bb\bbw.exe), delete that one also.

Are you saying to delete the key that it finds, or the original key?

When telling someone to delete a registry key, we must be very clear.. any oops here could be fatal.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Whew!
This isn't Johnny but Dave, who jumped in this post when I also lost my sound in BB 2008.5 after recording an audio file
Thanks, Andrew, it worked - my sound is back! You're a genius. I was suspecting it must have something to do with the registry but didn't know where to look to fix the problem.
I was worried for a minute when I deleted all those registry entries and still wasn't getting any sound - until I remembered you have to reboot before registry changes take effect
Also after changing the registry, rebooting and starting up BB again, I had to hit the VSC DXI button and re-select VSC DXI under audio - then out came the sweet sounds of music.
Thanks again

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
