Hi,
I've figured out how to load and edit the patch files from the '+' button next to the GM2 button at the top left of the main window. I've also discovered that if you make bank select/ patch (program) changes and save the song, BIAB saves the change.
I haven't been able to find the list editor ... if there is one.
I also see you can select the contollers in the piano roll for cc 0 MSB and cc 32 LSB ... but I haven't been able to figure out where you'd write them to your BIAB song.

You could in fact insert them in that window, but if you put them in any but the melody or solo tracks, they'll be wiped out on regeneration. Much simpler - for any track - is to use the "+" control in the bar settings window (F5). You won't see controller events inserted this way in the piano roll or event list, but they'll be notated in the notation window, they'll be evident in the midi monitor, and they should export to a midi file. (I haven't actually confirmed the export part with the latest build.)

EDIT - Actually, I think bank controller events inserted via F5 do appear in the piano roll. But their values are typically so low as to render them almost undetectable and impractical to edit there.

You've given me the way forward.
I expect I could either freeze the non-melody/ solo tracks once I put in the bank/ program select ... or simply save the song. Saved songs don't 'regenerate,' do they?
I've also noticed that you can click on the patch names in the drop down list in the '+' window. Pretty cool for 'call and response' to a melody line. I'm hoping that those 'changes' could also be written or midi recorded.
I'd already checked out putting in the bank/program change in a song, exporting it as midi and then dragging it into my sequence, Cubase, hooked up to the same synth. The changes were written to the midi file.
I'm seeing some great 'eazy arrangement' possibilities.

If you use F5 and insert something on a channel you get that saved. It does not change on regeneration. If you wanted you could do a myriad of things with this, I use the soloist track and set my Voicelive harmony foot controller to the same midi channels and insert commands to run it from the Soloist channel. To a limited degree it works, I like to do more but as I said, it works.
The + sign uses the .pat file designated. I have a Ketron SD2 midi gizmo, amazing sounds. PG music sells it. You load the .pat file and then you get the upper banks. If you have a synth check the support section of this website for there are over a hundred different synths supported there. The F5 command is one of the least understood, but more powerful features of Band in a Box. Change for example the volume of the tracks, etc.....

F5, who knew?! Another universe to explore.
BTW When you stated "over 100 synths supported" did you mean the page with the patch maps, or is there some other support section focused on hardware? I looked and couldn't find anything but the patch map page.

Yes, Page with patch maps. Unless you are good at making those, I'd always try to buy something that is already supported.

There is also a wizard inside the program that will convert any cakewalk patchmap to the pgmusic format.
Makes it a lot easier, if you happen to come across a synth that there is no patchmap included or on the patchmap page, always search the web for a cakewalk .ins file for it. Converts in a flash.

I'll keep that wizard in mind, Mac ... since I do have some unsupported synths: Roland JD990, Korg EX M1 R, Korg Radias and Emu Command Station.
I'm already about 1/3 of the way to modifying the JV1010 'Orchestral' patch map to the JV80-17 Country expansion board. When I get it done, I'll try to figure out how to upload it. I'm glad I rescued the JV1010 from the closet ... not a bad GM set and a whole lot more with 'Session' ... and it'll fit into my backpack with my laptop for cafeine injectioned musings at the local coffee shop. Just got to make sure there's an A/C socket free.
In looking at the 'roll your own' patch map instructions, I can see that it's just tedious, not difficult. Who knows, maybe one of these days when I'm really into 'mind numbing' I'll try to make one for one of my other synths ... unless I find a Cakewalk '*.ins' file first.

My jv1010 is retired, the Ketron Sd2 took it's place. Samples of that on site here.

Sure ... I'd like to hear them 'head to head' on the GM patches, but since I like 'country.' I'm pretty doubtful the Ketron can come up with anything like the patches on my 'Country' wav expansion board ... about 12 pedal steel patches and near like amount of fiddle and mandolin with nearly a 100 different acoustic and electric guitars ... ummmh, don't think so.
BTW ... even though I did rescue the 1010 from my closet, it is actually brand new. I had a friend who went to a Roland trade show in Los Angeles last year and they gave away 'corporate' new in the box door prizes of discontinued items. You have to work before you retire, don't you?

I worked, worked some more, started full time in 66, and then retired from the full time part time job, then the full time job, and after a years started to work again due to boredom. But I'm very demanding. Usually $40 to $50 an hour,and I try and limit that to 20 hours a week.
The advantage of having the JV1010 in the mix was I could layer another sound, I could control it with my fingers. The Ketron has no knobs, just a volume slider.
I tend to make a huge home setup, and on the day I play the gig, take just the keyboard, mic and Bose system. Its a keep it simple plan, and it works fine. I can be way more creative, but many people just don't appreciate that. And if I get a really good sound I've people asking me where I get my Karaoke tracks.
If you were into production and had all that stuff you'd put it in studio, migrate everything to RealBand and have at it.
Once you compare a nice fiddle track and slide track from Realtracks the synth may go back in the closet. When I'm happy with my tweaking of the original french version (57) of Let it be me, I'll put that up for a listen. I'm trying to negotiate rights to it from France right now, too bad it wasn't Canadian, here an under 200 press version was going to be about $50 bucks for any cover.
Try and listen to all the demos. And then go head to head with yourself, the results might surprise you. As I'm retired I tend to use the software for about 4 hours a day, and have used about 6 synths. I'm sold on
1. RealDrums are normally not always better.
2. Adding one or two Realtracks boosts the end result.
3. The Bose makes me a much better singer and the Audix 5 adds to that a lot.
4. I have more fun trying to make it sound better live, forget being an amateur recording engineer, fighting about headspace and plug-ins.
Just my musings on a night where the pills won't work and my feet are killing me. 4 hours of sleep last night, and one hour so far tonight. Zombie would describe me. LOL.

While I use and love my Ketron SD-2 and SD-4, my MIDI rack still has quite the assortment of older synths available. There are certain things that each one still does well and I love that also.
I think the Ketrons outshine most all of my older hardware MIDI solutions when it comes to the GM bank, though, and it is now my synth of choice for auditioning General MIDI files, running BiAB for practice, etc. The Yamaha keyboard that contains a real GM bank and not an XG bank is my second choice, it is getting long in the tooth but can hold its own for the most part. The old W-7. And like your 1010, it has all the addon patch boards installed, quite an investment.
That 1010 still should have a lot of life left to it.

@John ... I think I was a little too obtuse in my last post trying to make a joke. I meant that unlike your JV1010, which you say is now retired in the closet, since mine is virtually brand new and little used, it doesn't deserve to retire as it hasn't yet worked.
Unlike both you and Mac, I am relatively new to the hardware game, having spent my first 5 or 6 years fooling with sequencing and digital audio entirely 'in the box' with softsynths, etc. About 2 years ago I caught a hardware bug and although with not a lot of money, but certainly more money than brains, went on a Craig's list and e-bay hardware binge. My best scores were the Korg EX M1 R that I bought dead for $150.00 and had to learn how to replace the battery and use MidiOx to reset, and my Motu AV parallel time piece that I bought for $35.00 and with a lot of internet searching got working. Now all my rack synths are a mouse click away from my master keyboard. Having these great synth sounds at beck and call is certainly a 'Wizard of Oz' experience.
I am sure you both know what you are talking about, and I must conclude ... despite lack of first hand experience with it ... that the Ketron is almost unarguably the best GM sound module. And if you only had one synth as a BIAB user, probably the only choice. I do note that BIAB as its name clearly states is precisely aimed as a product at recreating 'a band.' I can see the utility of an excellent GM module with 'natural sound' for its practicality and versatility. But as my main intent is to arrange and pull the midi to another sequencer ... that is neither use BIAB live or mix down audio in BIAB ... having the Ketron seems a little less critical for my purposes. Of course then, I could get a raise and my brain could continue to shrink?
Oh, and one last little 1010 'bon mot.' Using the Cubase Midi Device Panel that pulls up an interactive graphic representation of a 16 channel midi mixer with channel vol, pan, reverb, chorus and all 37 of the 1010's effects available for realtime tweaking is pretty sweet.
