I recently upgraded to 2011 build 313, but have noticed that BIAB no longer recognises upper bank patches for the SD2. I loaded the new version straight over the previous one.
I've done to Factory reset, and re-downloaded the patch map from the PG site.
BIAB changes to the regular patches, but when I'm using upper banks, they are ignored. It was working fine in 2010.5.

Can anyone suggest a fix?
Thanks in advance

Oh my, I hope that old bug is not back again to plague hardware MIDI synth users.

Will have to check it out at this end and see what happens...

I'm happy to report that upper banks work on my hardware synth in version 2011... but it isn't a Ketron.

This is almost too fundamental to suggest, but it nailed me more than once when I was trying to get my upper banks working, so I'll mention it anyway.

Are you sure the sequence isn't sending a GM sysex to the unit before you try to change to an upper bank patch? Or that you haven't inadvertently switched from performance mode to GM mode somehow?

If has been my experience here that if I get the Upper Banks working on one brand of GM hardware synth, it works on all.

And I've got plenty of 'em here, from most major mfrs.

The Ketron SD2 does an internal RESET to GM everytime the power switch is cycled on, so I tend to doubt that the machine could be left in some state where it wouldn't receive or act on commands sent by BiaB.

However, there could be a problem inside BiaB and whether or not that is a bug (again) or whether one particular user has a corruption in a file somewhere or a User Setting changed could impact the action.

In which case the first thing to do is Reboot the Computer and check operation again.

And if that fails, try RETURN TO FACTORY SETTINGS, BUTTON #2.

My roland synth will not accept upper bank patches if it is already in GM mode (no matter how it got there).

Apparently BIAB does not send the sysex to put it into performance mode before it sends the patch information. Unless I manually reach over and push a button to exit GM mode and begin performance mode, any patch changes sent (even if accompanied by MSB/LSB) will set a GM patch

But this is the only hard synth I've ever owned, so I have no basis of comparison.

Your particular Roland synth is designed to work differently from the way the Ketron SD2 is designed to work.

Again, cycling the Power Switch on the SD2 forces a hard RESET and the device is ready for use with BiaB.

Upper Banks are then only a matter of sending the one single command necessary.

Every time you turn the SD2 ON, it is hard reset and ready to go. Simple and user friendly.

I know this is kind of fundamental, but after downloading, did you click the PAT button and re-apply the Ketron .pat file ?? I have the SD4 and the upper banks are working fine.

It's not quite the same as the previous bug. The old bug wouldn't let the patch numbers "stick" - this time BIAB accepts and holds the upper bank patch numbers, however for some reason the patches won't change

No problem here using the upper banks. Loaded an all midi song and changed the melody patch four or five times while playing and the sound changed accordingly at this end.

Well I’m getting frustrated at not being able to get the higher banks working. Here’s what I’ve done so far:

1. Downloaded the Ketron SD2 .PAT files from the PG site, copied the file to the BB file, and opened the file from the “+” higher banks.

2. Have done both Return to Factory settings – including MID drivers and patch maps

3. Some time ago I copied BIAB2010 to an external drive as a back up. I compared many preferences, and all were the same on both machines.

4. Tried various start up options (computer then keyboard, then Ketron – all combinations)

5. Used the “Send Patch” button from the “+” area

6. Got crabby and had two beers.

I’ve set up a song with patch changes every four bars. The regular patches change fine, and although the blue bar at the very top of the screen says “Bar Setting Patch Changes” there is no change when the higher bank patches are selected.

As I mention at the start of this thread, I loaded BB2011 straight on top of 2010.5 - there were no changes to my keyboard, cabling – anything. (XP by the way)

If everyone who has been kind enough to respond and tell me that they’re working okay, I feel that it’s probably a setting that somehow has been changed.

I think I’ll go back to step #6 again.

Now bear in mind I'm old ....

I got messing with this last week and decided the wife should play the flute through the vocal harmony box as I can't sing anymore.

I forgot I'd rendered a song.

The vocal harmony box was not responding. It took me 30 minutes to discover that I had checked the use Dxi synth box to render something and left it. If you check that box the Ketron won't work. This I found out.

My vocal box is setup on Midi ch5. I also have the soloist track on ch 5 so I can go in there and put a patch change like 25 (Nylon string guit) but that sets the box to preset 2.5 so I can change on the fly. I hear something on the soloist track I don't like and silence it. For hours it never dawned on me that my box wasn't responding due to the muted track, and I finally figured it out. I now set the volume to 1 and erase the track, I don't use solos anyway.

Have a few more, it'll sound fine...

Isn't this fun? I've thought for years and even mentioned it in the wishlist that there should be some way for a user to enter into a screen within Biab or RB their exact hardware/software/OS/synth/interface setup and either have the program automatically configure everything or at least display another screen with clear, point by point instructions how to do it. Also, where there a choice such as pick MME or ASIO, there's a help icon that explains what those are and how they work. I'm sure some of those settings are within Windows itself so no third party app can access it directly but other things are within Biab/RB so this should be possible.

Hello Keith,

Open the MIDI Monitor, filter it to only show program changes and control change 0 (Bank change MSB) and 32 (Bank change LSB), then play your song. This way you can determine if Band-in-a-Box is sending the correct messages when you expect it to. Is it? If not, what's happening?

The aforementioned is much easier if you take a file with a simple melody and use all realtracks. Then the only midi is for the melody. The ketron should flash, and when testing I turn off the other feed to my mixer and just listen to the melody. It should be obvious, for then the light only flashes when the notes go out. Then the patch changes should show up in the midi monitor along with the notes.

Good clue John - I'll try that. When testing last night the Ketron blue light was flashing as it should.

If notes are going from every track it can be overwhelming to watch and figure out. The simpler the better.

I get weird stuff once in a while. My vocal harmonizer seized up today, I happened to see it happen as I turned the know.

Not that I really use it for vocals at the moment. Maybe the voice and the balance come back at the same time eh? But I'm messing with it and my horns with some success. I think. I need to record it and get someone with ears to tell me.

The vocalist goes on Midi 5 so I can isolate just that and watch the data as the chords go out to it.

I always find when something is wrong it's usually my fault, just as the wife told me was the case. I'm wrong.

Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.

The 2026 49-PAK is loaded with other great new add-ons as well. Learn more about the 2026 49-PAK!
