You said you wanted Beatles.
An obvious (and good) choice would be Paul's "Birthday" from the "White Album" (1968).
You said you wanted British invasion.
"Do Wah Diddy Diddy" (1964) from Manfred Mann is easy to sing and easy to play. It will get them up on the dance floor. Make it an audience participation number. After a couple of drinks, everyone will have fun with it.
2011 - 50 = 1961, her birth year.
If you have backing singers AND you can contract her name to one syllable, then Dion's "Runaround Sue" (1961) would be a great choice. It's a crowd pleaser, and uptempo.
Ex: If her name's "Florence", then it's "Runaround Flo"; intro: "The year Florence was born, Dion wrote this song about her..." She'll get a kick out of that.
If you can't contract her name, then the Shirelles' (Carole King's) "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" (1961) from her birth year would be a great choice.
I figure she will love you tomorrow after going to all this trouble for her birthday!

I think that's a great idea about a song released in the year of her birth, and also subtituting her name in the song.
But I think "Runaround Sue" may get Sam into trouble.

I had to record a few songs for a funeral recently (it was my father-in-law actually). My mother-in-law said that he loved Englebert Humperdinck, and asked my to record "Please Release Me".
As I started to play the song, I sang the words to myself:
"Please release me let me go,
Cos I Don't love you any more
To live a lie would be a sin
Release me, and let me love again.
I have found a new love dear,
And she will always want me near,
Her lips are warm while yours are cold,
Release me my darling let me go"
EEEEwww!!
I now take more notice of the words to songs.
But the best story I've ever heard was a friend of mine was playing background/dinner music at a wedding reception.
One of the song's he played without thinking was 'The Lady Is A Tramp"

Hi Sam,
this is a decepitvely hard post to respond to.
Are you looking for songs;
- that you like?
- that your friend will like?
- that we, the forum members like?
- that will go down well with the guests (in which case we need to know something about their age group and background)?
- that you can (reasonably easily) learn and sing?
- that are suited to a fun party atmosphere (maybe this will rule out some of the more introverted and reflective folky stuff)?
- some combination or compromise of the above?
This is, of course, a huge generalisation but most people will probably identify in particular with the music that was around when they were in the 16-30 age bracket, as this, again probably, was when they were going out the most and being exposed to popular music.
As users of this forum, most of us are probably atypical in that we’re nuts about music.
This brings our search up to the 70s/80s more than the 60s.
There are huge differences across borders too. Acts that were popular in the UK in the States may not even be known by nationals from other countries.
Once you have narrowed down your target, my favoured search techniques are to look at charts (as already advised) but better still is to find track listings of compilation albums which represent the time and vibe you are looking for.

Well I was under the impression that the party had a theme. A Happy Hippy party. That means the venue will be set in a hippy decor (think lava-lamps, carpets, beads-curtains etc.) That means the staff will wear hippy clothing. That (often) means the guests have already had fun at home choosing their hippy-outfits. That means the music MUST be in hippy-style. This has nothing to do with the age of the audience or the age of the birthday-girl. It has everything to do with the theme that person chose for the party. You will have to respect that. The hippy-scene had their own music. So some music may have been popular in those days; country music was not a part of the hippy repertoire here in Europe. Citaat:

That is another good point.
Most of us here on the forum have a wide musical interest and therefor know a lot of songs other people may not know, simply because it's never been a hit-record in their neck of the woods.
@Sam: You may want to look into your sets again; there are quite a lot of songs in there that don't fit the theme. (Edelweiss, man of constant sorrow, streets of London, (the last farewell doesn't fit the theme, but is made for your voice, so go ahead  )

She specifically wants a 60s Hippy birthday party. I don't personally want to play too many slow songs or love songs as there will be about 40 people aged around 50+, mostly musicians. Gabi loves musicians.
I am looking for songs that will fit this theme that are fun to play and easy to learn that will get people at least dancing a bit (most of them are single in any case, if not all - this is an age of divorced or never marrieds). This is also Austria so a lot of them will only know the mainstream numbers. They don't HAVE TO BE 60s numbers or even hippy songs but she has expressed an interest in having an all-night mini Woodstock!
Trouble is, a lot of these songs as listed above are likely to make people feel sleepy and go home. I would like to have something from '61 but so far it looks like 'Blue Moon' and/or 'Are You Lonesome Tonight'. Gabi has said that she wants me to sing songs that I will enjoy singing and that suit my voice but are also with the theme. Mike, you know my voice, what do you think?
Due to my rather simplistic guitar playing, I would prefer songs that can be simplified down to triads and either I, ii, IV, V7, vi
Please bear also in mind that I am unlikely to have a band with me, perhaps a flautist but that is probably all. Several of us are also members of the Vienna Folk Club (of which I was elected Chairman last night). Vox and guitar does tend tio make things sound a bit country / folk - hard to get a real rock / rock&roll feeling going with just a guitar.
Due to my financial circumstances, it looks like I may have to end up busking this year to make ends meet so, in an effort to economise on learning time, I would also like the songs to be the kind of numbers that I can busk with just voice and guitar and play in pubs and bars and on the street.

Don't forget Dylan - Tambourine Man, Blowin' in the Wind, Like a Rolling Stone, All Along the Watchtower.
The Weight, Mrs Robinson, The Boxer, With A little Help From My Friends, Obladi - these are all person pleasers. I was doing a one-man guitar act at the time and they always engaged the audience.

Something I haven't thought of until now - how do people get along with using BIAB/RB as a backing band? In other words, Band -1 (with you on vox and whatever instrument)? If it works, does anybody have any pre-prepared 60s backing trax -1 that they are prepared to let me have (preferably with chords and lyrics, i.e. a lead sheet)? No panic BTW folks, this gig is not until April 16th My flautist is so thrilled at working with me again though (he loved our Trad Irish Christmas gig) - he has arranged a 'hat' gig for us for Saturday week

Notes Norton has been on this forum forever.
I'm sure you're aware, Sam, but Notes does what you are contemplating (working parties), professionally, for decades. (He's done cruise lines, for instance.)
Without question, he knows how to work a crowd.
The BiaB styles that he creates are his sideline.
I can't imagine that you could get better backing tracks from anyone else.

The movie "Woodstock" opens with Canned Heat's "Going Up The Country" (1968), playing over shots of the New York rural countryside.
There were a handful of highlight moments in the flim, for me. That one was the best, simply magic.
I LOVE this recording. It was Canned Heat's biggest hit.
You could make it work, as a solo guitarist, with flute guy.
It's not a ballad. It's not really a dance record, but could pass, if you hit it a little harder than the recording.
The guitar part is easy.
Here's the thing. 90% (at least) of this record is the flute line. The flute line is the hook.
It's so cool, that I'd be tempted to open with it, except for 2 things:
1. People who show up late would miss it.
2. The crowd is going to LOVE flute guy after this number. It's a great opportunity to call him out in front of everybody, and show him some love for helping you out.

That is a very good thought, John. I have just taken a look at that disk - the only trouble is I would like the lead sheet on screen to show the lyrics too. I know there is a fake book to go with the CD but how do I go about doing that? Is that easy? Does the fake book tell you where to insert the lyrics?

There is more than one way to put the lyrics there.
Understand that you'd be in jail or broke if you sold songs with the lyrics and melody, so what you get is the book, and Notes has gone through, put in every chord, and added his best guess from the midi type files as a style.
So in my case I just go to the internet, and if looking for Four Strong Winds I find the words, copy them, open the lyrics 'clipboard' style window and paste them there. Make any edits or improvements.
I then resize for the whole gig the band in a box window to take up 2/3 of the screen, the right half 1/3 of the screen and use that to remember the lyrics.
There are other ways of course, but that works for me. Most songs are fairly short in that era.
I have some sheets I had out, and on those I left a space before the word where the chord changed, wrote chords in with bright red marker and they went over really well.
Lots of options.
Remember, a 50th birthday should involve a lot of joking at the start about the 'spanking' because that's just a British Tradition, bringing some potential stage props can make for an ongoing joke between pieces. Lots of fun.....even if you never get around to it, it lurks and lingers, clapping hands into mics.
I bet I found the words to all the songs in that book in a few seconds on the net.
And Amazon gets it to you in a few days. Once you download (takes seconds) the band in a box files you can just start and go. I add an intro. Paste the words. And mess with the style and tempo, and usually the key if I was singing. Or it's in 6 sharps. I can handle the rest but 6 sharps I should practice.

The Xtra Styles require the UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, or Audiophile Edition of Band-in-a-Box®. (Xtra Styles PAK 19 requires the 2025 or higher UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, or Audiophile Edition. They will not work with the Pro or MegaPAK version as they require the RealTracks included in the UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, or Audiophile Edition.

Band-in-a-Box® 2026 for Mac is here and it is packed with major new features! There’s a new modern look, a GUI redesign to all areas of the program including toolbars, windows, workflow and more. There’s a Multi-view layout for organizing multiple windows. A standout addition is the powerful AI-Notes feature, which uses AI neural-net technology to transcribe polyphonic audio into MIDI—entire mixes or individual instruments—making it easy to study, view, and play parts from any song.
