Now before you start all the banjo jokes, I think I have found a bug with RealTrack #590 "Banjo, Bluegrass Doc Ev 100(Rhythm - Simple)".

Type in some simple chords C G D G
The simple banjo will not play them

If you make them a bit more complex C2 G2 D2 G2 or C/A G/B D/F# G/B
it will play.

Could anyone verify this for me?

I am using EverythingPak build 311

Now on to the banjo jokes I'll start:

What do you call two banjos at the bottom of the sea? (scroll down for answer)

a good start!

Hi Robb,

#590 (simple banjo) plays ok for me with the given major chords. I didn't need to use the c2, g2, etc., chords to get it to work. I have build #313.

Noel

Hi Robb,

Just tried #590 here and it works with the same simple chords.

*When BiaB does not do what it is supposed to do:

First thing I try is a Reboot of the PC, as it may be a situation where Resources got lost or messed up.

If the Reboot doesn't make things happen right, then I try Options -> Return to Factory Settings as sometimes internal files that BiaB must write to become corrupted.

Upgraded to build 313, still no simple banjo.

I tried all 12 simple triads and none of them played. Then I tried appending each with a "2" A2, Bb2, B2, etc.. all of the "2" chords played.

It has to be missing files. Or some files that can't be read. Can't work properly for one and not another. I'd either re-install, or call pgmusic.

I am running the program directly from the PGMusic supplied drive. How would I find out if the files are missing?

BTW: The minor triads are not working either.

Minor keys on a banjo, who knew!?

When did you get the hard drive?

Maybe you could list the number of tracks with banjo in them.

I'm not at my Windows machine and it's too late to travel downstairs.

Is it possible you erased styles and are using the wrong realtracks setting? There was an option to turn off fast generation, and another to use + or - files or some such thing. Did you mess with those settings?

If you have a fast machine and it copes you can erase files. Did you do that to the hard drive?

That's why now that the thing runs faster and sounds better, I erased the files after putting things on my primary hard drive and stashing portable one they sent me which is intact except I update it with new proven builds not in beta any longer.

Thanks for trying to hel me with this John!

I purchased my EverythingPAK on the USB HD in December. I have not changed any settings, or intentionally deleted anything. I don't think my drive came with the +/- files (the drive reports 46 GB used).

I tried unticking the "speed up generation of RealTracks" box. Still a no go.

The day the drive arrived, I backed up the files to another USB HD. I just ran the program from the back-up drive and have the same problem. So if files are missing from the drive, that is the way it came to me.

Did you try this with several styles? And which available instrument slot are you using? Or Soloist/Melodist? Are you using the A or B part marker? Could use a little more info to take this troubleshooting a little further.
Good luck.

Hi Robb,

Did you run the PG Music setup program on the USB drive and then choose the option to run BIAB from the external hard drive?

Recently another person in the forum re-ran setup and it fixed their problems. It might be worth trying this.

Regards,
Noel

You are absolutely right on this one. I loaded the following style that contains RT590: I tried this on 2 computers, did the factory reset, standard sound card, in other words nothing exotic. Everything is running on the hard drive, no external USB drive used.

_DOCBGMS.STY. Slow Bluegr. Mand. Solo (100 RS)
All RealTracks. Quintet.
RD: NASHVILLEEVEN8^8-HIHATO,RIDE :
RT592: Bass, Acoustic Bluegrass Doc Ev 100, Dow Tomlin
RT590: Banjo, Bluegrass Doc Ev 100 (Rhythm - Simple), Scott Vestal
RT598: Guitar, Acoustic, Strumming Bluegrass Doc Ev 100, PG Artist
RT820: Mandolin Soloist Bluegrass Ev 100, Andy Leftwich

My chords were a simple C-G-D-C straight 4/4 time in the key of G

When I clicked on play there is no banjo coming out of the speakers. When I clicked on SOLO, no sound came out of the speaker. I then changed the first 4 chords to C2-G2-D2-G2 and the banjo plays just fine. I then changed the chords to C2-G2-D2-C2-C-G-D-C. When BIAB played C2-G2-D2-G2 everything is fine but when it got to measures 5 through 8 (C-G-D-C) the banjo died again.

Then tried the following various chords where Y=I hear the banjo and N=I hear no banjo.

C2 - Y
G7 - N
D6 - Y
G13 - Y
Cmin - N
GMaj7 - Y
D9sus - Y
Gaug - Y
Csus - Y
Gdim - Y
Dm7 - Y
G5 - Y
C - N
G - N
D - N
G - N

I then loaded the following style which DOES NOT have 590 as part of the RealTrack and everything works just fine.

_BG_BNJR.STY. Bluegrass Pop (100 RS)
All RealTracks. Quintet.
RD: NASHVILLEEVEN8^2-SIDESTICK,HIHAT :
RT592: Bass, Acoustic Bluegrass Doc Ev 100, Dow Tomlin
RT598: Guitar, Acoustic, Strumming Bluegrass Doc Ev 100, PG Artist
RT589: Banjo, Bluegrass Doc Ev 100 (Rhythm), Scott Vestal
RT599: Mandolin, Rhythm Bluegrass Doc Ev 100, PG Artist

I then tried other bluegrass RT's that DO NOT contain 590 and it works just fine.

Almost Done: I loaded another RT that DOES contain 590

_DOCBG_F.STY. Med Bluegrass w Fiddle (100 RS)
All RealTracks. Quintet.
RD: NASHVILLEEVEN8^8-HIHATO,RIDE :
RT592: Bass, Acoustic Bluegrass Doc Ev 100, Dow Tomlin
RT590: Banjo, Bluegrass Doc Ev 100 (Rhythm - Simple), Scott Vestal
RT598: Guitar, Acoustic, Strumming Bluegrass Doc Ev 100, PG Artist
RT593: Fiddle, Rhythm Bluegrass Doc Ev 100, Andy Leftwich

And it also has no banjo when the same chords are played as listed above.

AND FINALLY I took a known good style which I always use and works perfectly on the banjo part on all chords:

_BG_BNJR.STY. Bluegrass Pop (100 RS)
All RealTracks. Quintet.
RD: NASHVILLEEVEN8^2-SIDESTICK,HIHAT :
RT592: Bass, Acoustic Bluegrass Doc Ev 100, Dow Tomlin
RT598: Guitar, Acoustic, Strumming Bluegrass Doc Ev 100, PG Artist
RT589: Banjo, Bluegrass Doc Ev 100 (Rhythm), Scott Vestal
RT599: Mandolin, Rhythm Bluegrass Doc Ev 100, PG Artist

and then changed RT589 to RT590 and it fails again on the banjo on the same chords. When back to #589 for the banjo and everything works perfectly again.

After all this testing, it certainly looks like the culprit is #590

I would classify this as a definite bug that needs to be looked at. Good find.

Just tried one other test to satisfy my own curiosity

Loaded the same chord progression I used before and used the standard BISB MIDI Bluegrass style C_Jethro.sty and the song plays in all its glorious MIDI rendition on all chords I chose.

Then I substituted the MIDI banjo part with RT#589 and it plays the RealTrack portion just fine on all the following chords I picked.

C2
G7
D6
G13
Cmin
GMaj7
D9sus
Gaug
Csus
Gdim
Dm7
G5
C
G
D
G

I then substituted RT#590 and guess what, it fails on all the same chords as in the previous post.

I used this example and was able to duplicate the same results. My version is build 313.

Hi jcland, Robb,

I suggest that a couple of 8-bar comparison files are rendered and forwarded, with an explanation, to Support. I'd also draw their attention to this thread. It's sounds like this is a problem that they need to know about.

regards,
Noel

I sent it on to their tech support with a detailed explanation. No need to send them a file as I see it, all they need to do is enter a simple C-G-D-G progression and test it out like I did.

We will see what comes back.

Also to really satisfy my curiosity, I did the same progression using a Gypsy Jazz RealTrack, totally unrelated to Bluegrass and substituted RT #590 for one of the parts and of course it failed. RT #589 works just fine. Same results as earlier.

Not really sure how well a banjo went with a Django progression but who knows I might have just invented a new style of music.

Just tried again with #590 banjo here and cold not duplicate those results.

I think you should send the file to support so that just in case they cannot duplicate those results either, they will have your file to take a look at.

I think I would Freeze the broken file to forward that to them.

This is not happening on all installs, apparently.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
