I don't usually reply to anyone with the name stinky. It means sounds not serious. I'll let someone else jump in. Next time in a forum use some transparency. No one wants to reply to Superman or the deity of squirrels. That's just me, the others here may thrive on being obtuse. That's their angle, when it comes to that I'm sort of square. Holding my nose briefly whilst I await the others with olfactory insufficiency.

Hi Rik,

If you enter Bdim or Bdim7, either will give you Bdim7. On the chord sheet it will be called "Bdim" but it's actually the four note chord, Bdim7.

Regards,
Noel

Here's another way to look at all this.

In BIAB 2011, and this may be true in earlier versions but I can no longer check:

1) enter Xdim7
2) displays as Xdim
3) plays as Xdim7 except for certain classical styles that use only a triad, where it plays as Xdim

Having a true diminished triad without the seventh is one of the oldest requests in the Wishlist.

The reason you can type Xdim7 and it displays as Xdim is found in the file, /BB/pgshortc.txt

You may also add other chord type shortcuts as described in that file.

Hi Rik. Congratulations on changing to a more respectable sounding username. It might be a good idea, though, to write to PG Music and explain what you did, and ask them to delete the other account. I think it might be a violation of the terms of use in the forum to have two active usernames, and I've seen this misused on other forums. It is clear you meant no harm, so just tell them about it.

EDIT: yes, see #11 here: http://www.pgmusic.com/forum_rules.htm

Welcome to the forum, and enjoy your studies of jazz. Get to know the Chord Builder (right-click in the chordsheet) since it can show you what chords you may enter, and even play the sound of them for you.

Don't know if this could useful for you.
To be sure I have a diminished 7 chord, let's say for Cdim7 : I enter Ebdim/C. Seems always to sound right.

Forgot to point out something. It's true that I don't use BIAB for notation. I'm always in the chord window in BIAB, so the spelling Ebdim/C is only for playback purposes. To be sure that I put a dim7. In my jazz scores, the spelling will be Co7 (Cdim7).

Hi Pierre. The reason your alternate of Ebdim/C works is the nature of the diminished chord's repeating notes, so it's just a question of inversions.

Let's take C as a root.

Cdim = C, Eb, Gb

add the seventh and you get A (Bbb).

If you keep going up for different inversions, you get again to C, Eb, Gb, A etc.

So, you can start a diminished seventh chord on any of its notes as the root, and you have the same notes in the chord, just a different inversion.

Since BIAB plays a diminished seventh anyway, what you have with Ebdim/C is the same chord sound as Cdim just with another C at the top of the chord.

Hey Matt

Thanks for the explanation. I knew about dim chords. But what I have to do is open my eyes and read the posts !! Noel had the answer.

Actually I had never let BIAB play a dim chord since what I wanted was dim7. So I figured there was a "mysterious" way of doing it and adopted the inversion spelling from the very 1st time I entered a dim7 chord. And you are so right, Cdim does playback dim7 !!

Thanks again

You're welcome. I thought people might wish to know WHY Noel's answer was correct, hence my first explanation following his. Do take a look at the small file, /BB/pgshortc.txt and you will quickly see what is going on internally with chord entry in BIAB.

It's a tiny thing in the grand scheme, but it is precisely to avoid the need for unnecessary workarounds like yours that I hope PG Music could add support for a straight diminished triad, and support both a diminished and a diminished seventh chord.
