Just got Netflix and it has the old Peter Guinn series. I just barely remember it as a dectective show. But it's as much a Jazz show as anything. Everybody knows Mancini's theme for the show but so far every episode has showcased Jazz. Guinn hangs out in a Jazz club called Mothers. Dates Edie the singer (Lola Albright). I'll bet sharp eyes can identify a lot of the musicians on there.
Crazy man show, man. Really swings. Dig.

That was a great show, mostly B&W but I think went to color at the last season, maybe. Craig Stevens, I think was the actor "Peter Gunn" and the police lieutenant played on other cop shows later like "Streets of San Fransisco" and maybe "Rockford Files" Good stuff, Wyndham

Yes, Craig Stevens. Hershel Bernardi is the cop.
I'm on season one and it's B/W. Hope they didn't change it. It's not only b/w but it is ALWAYS night. Like the film noirs I think they call them. Simple plots and all, but fun to watch.
It's cool to watch a club full of people enjoying Jazz.

There's a great old Mancini album from the fifties, called "Music from Peter Gunn." That is, he didn't just write the theme, but I think he scored the whole series. Mancini also did the music for another short-lived show, "Mr. Lucky," another spin-off by Blake Edwards -- I had that album, too. Great stuff.

Here is a partial quote from Blake Edwards about the Peter Gunn music. The complete article is here: PeterGunn-BlakeEdwards As creator of the show, I naturally insisted on using live music throughout. In this case esthetic necessity was implemented by the fact that many of the nation's greatest jazz musicians are in the Hollywood area—an ideal opportunity to handpick the most creative jazzmen. To give us the musical background required, we also needed a composer with roots in the jazz idiom, one who could interpret dramatic action in the language of modern jazz. Henry Mancini is that composer. ...... Drummer Jack Sperling and bassist Rolly Bundock state the show's forceful opening motif, Fallout! The raw-sounding trumpet belongs to Pete Candoli, a veteran of the Woody Herman and Stan Kenton bands. Dreamsville, which might be subtitled "a love refrain for hipsters," features a moving alto sax solo by Ted Nash; his brother Dick can be heard dueling with fellow trombonist Milt Bernhart on Session at Pete's Pad. Saxist Ronnie Lang, who, in common with most of the musicians here, is a graduate of the Les Brown band, wields a bulging baritone on Sorta Blue. Other soloists at Mother's, the nitery where Peter Gunn hangs his Brooks Brothers jacket, are vibist Larry Bunker and pianist Johnny T. Williams. BLAKE EDWARDS © by Radio Corporation of America, 1959

Thanks for that. I went and dug out my Stan Kenton CD's and stuck them into the little Bose. Takes my mind off other stuff.

Yes, Mancini is in the credits as producing it all. Herb Ellis is mentioned sometimes in the credits but that's the only name I recognize. Might not be the same Herb Ellis but there is alway a guitar player in the group. Haven't been able to get a good look at him.
They use the old Beatnik talk like "crazy man", "dig", "way out."
It's weird to see into America just before Rock and Roll took over.

Peter Gunn was the first television series to use jazz motifs throughout the entire show. Up until that point, shows would have opening and closing themes, and 'word from our sponsors' breaks, but Edwards and Mancini really weaved the entire score throughout the show.
I have the The Music From Peter Gunn album with bonus tracks. It's a great album. It's also available on CD. Doesn't have Henry Mancini on it, I don't think, but it's great album.
Mundell Lowe also did an album called 'TV Action Jazz', and if you can find that, I highly recommend it.

I'm blessed watching God do what He does best. I've had a few rough years, and I'm still not back to where I want to be, but I'm on the way and things are looking far better now than what they were!
