Does any one know how to get a USB Midi Keyboard to work in XP on a laptop?
I've just upgraded to BIAB 2011 and I've installed it on a Compaq laptop for the obvious portability, but the laptop won't let me use my keyboard. I get the usual Windows noises when I plug it in, but BIAB says "no midi input".
The keyboard works perfectly with BIAB on my old iMac and my old desktop Windows XP machines, but I can't take them with me.
Thanks

I assume this must be a USB MIDI keyboard connection?
Does that keyboard need to have its own proprietary DRIVERS installed or is it "Class Compliant" with Windows and thus all you need do is plug it in?
Check inside BiaB under the Options menu, "MIDI/Audio..." and see what MIDI inputs are available for highlighting in the LH window there. Try highlighting each one in turn and hitting Okay to close the window to see if one of them may be your keyboard.
**With BiaB, the MIDI instrument must be already connected and recognized by the OS before opening the BiaB program or BB won't be able to "see" it in that list.**

Hi Mac,

YES IT IS

IT IS CLASS COMPLIANT
Check inside BiaB under the Options menu, "MIDI/Audio..." and see what MIDI inputs are available for highlighting in the LH window there. Try highlighting each one in turn and hitting Okay to close the window to see if one of them may be your keyboard.
BIAB SAYS "NO MIDI/AUDIO INPUT"
**With BiaB, the MIDI instrument must be already connected and recognized by the OS before opening the BiaB program or BB won't be able to "see" it in that list.**
WHEN I PLUG THE KEYBOARD IN IT SHOWS IN THE DEVICE MANAGER AS ICON NEURON 25, BUT THEN IT CHANGES TO USB AUDIO DEVICE.
THE KEYBOARD WORKS PERFECTLY WITH MY DESKTOP PC AND MY IMAC

That's a USB bus-powered device. Try another USB port on your Laptop or alternatively try connecting via some active hub.

Correct. It can be bus powered but I've been using a power unit.
I tried using a powered USB hub but the results are exactly the same.
I'm getting the impression that I won't be using this keyboard with this laptop, and I'm getting used to the idea that I will have to create midi files on one machine and send them across to the laptop one way or another. Useless when travelling.
Big disappointment, but no fault of BIAB, I think - just a crap laptop.

Does your keyboard have a "Local On" and "Local Off" setting on it. Mine does and I had to set it to local off. It showed up as a usb in the midi in settings area. I selected that for midi in and the same for midi out. That is exactly what I have been working on all evening. Finally got it going. You might also play around with your audio settings. Unplug your kybd from the computer, restart and fully boot up the computer then plug they kybd into the computer. The computer should see it and load a driver for it. Once that is done, fire up BIAB and see if a USB shows up in the midi/audio settings area. Good luck.

Thanks Phestus, but I did all that already and I'm sick of it.
I will contact the laptop retailer and see what he can come up with.
And I thought that I was pretty lucky, A friend purchased a laptop for the same purpose as me and despite what the retailer said, it had no sound card at all, and would never do any music. Needless to say it went back.
People considering laptops for music - watch out. So far the only laptops I hear good news about are the Apple models.

Be careful about *which* product to blame, it really could be the keyboard itself or more likely its DRIVERS that are the culprit here.
You might check the mfr's website, Support, to see if they've released any updated drivers for the thing, if so, download and install them.
FWIW - There are *MANY* people using laptops of different brands for this work, yours truly inclusive. But sometimes the shakedown of a particular device can take some investigation time and experimentation to get it up and running properly and that can happen regardless of whether or not you have a desktop or laptop machine. Just the way things are with the technology.

Thanks for the responses. I'll follow up a few leads and see what the manufacturers come up with.

I have a Evolution (now M-Audio) keyboard that is supposed to be class compliant but I had to install drivers manually anyway.
