Dan,

Quote:

Once before a band gig I inadvertently used a tuner which had been set to a full step low, to tune my guitar. When I hit the first chord on the opening song I knew something was horribly wrong, so I tried the second chord, OMG! it was like I was naked on the stage. Every string was a full step low! So I guess in a small way I know how she felt. .

I was playing in my first flatpicking contest at the behest of a friend who was the former National Flatpicking Champion, and both of us had made it into the finals on “day two” of the contest. So had several state champions from the East coast.

We each had 2 songs of our choosing to play for the final round, and I “nailed” my first song. I also “nailed” the first 2 verses of 4 of my second song when I noticed someone in the audience of about 500 or 600 that I thought was an old friend. That moment of distraction caused me to forget my planned last 2 solos, but I never lost a beat. I launched into an improvisation of the last 2 solos or breaks.

I screwed up, …… but I won first place. I got away with my mistake, and nobody except my rhythm player knew I’d “diverted” from what I planned to play.

Unfortunately for Christina, everyone knew the words and realized she'd messed up ONE LINE!
