I recently got a new computer and happily installed all my music software and had all music-playing programs playing midi and audio just fine - including audio and midi from BIAB, Sonar X1, wmp, streaming online, midi players, etc. Even had them all playing at once. My old computer specs are in my signature. The new are:

Dell Desktop PC W7-HomePrem-64 bit / Core i5 760 (2.8GHz) / 8GB DDR3 / 1 TB SATA / Realtek Audio / Roland Fantom X8 / BIAB 2011 (314) / Event 6 Pro Monitors

The Realtek Audio I'm now using is the stock "embedded" system. Marginal, but it all works (16 bit, 44,1kHz). Audio is MME, no ASIO. I have not yet installed my EMU 1616 PCI. Plan to do that after all is in control.

Now, after all was working, BIAB stopped outputting music - midi (MS Wavetable Synth and Coyote) and audio. It WILL output MIDI to my Roland hardware synth. (I did not try Coyote when "all" was working). Otherwise, BIAB functions perfectly in all regards. All other programs still output music fine, including RealBand and other PG Music products. And when checking the audio and midi settings in these other PGM programs, all looks normal.

So I have to think that either there is some W7 thing going on that blocks BIAB output, or something in BIAB is amiss. I have done a Return ALL to Factory Settings and fiddled with every relevant parameter in BIAB I could find. Also fiddled with system audio settings. Also let BIAB get audio settings from soundcard. Did so without a hiccup. Nothing has any effect.

Keep in mind that BIAB initially played MIDI and audio fine.

Any solutions or trouble-shooing suggestions? Thanks

Hello Kelso,

Are you sure that the Band-in-a-Box volume isn't turned down in the Windows 7 mixer panel?

Hi Andrew - Yes, the W7 mixer sliders are high. And, if this is any clue, I see audio levels between 15 and 30% full scale in the mixer for both midi and audio BIAB output.

Hey Mac - Please explain/clarify. If you mean turn up the levels on all the faders, I've been doing that for over a week while twiddling and resetting.

Hi kelso,

From reading your posts, it sounds like you might have already investigated what I'm about to say. Just in case you haven't, though ...

In Windows Vista when I right-click on the Speaker icon in the Taskbar and then choose Playback Devices, I am taken to the speaker settings (the back picture in the screen capture below). Now, if I right-click on Speaker and select Properties, I am taken to all the slider options for my soundcard. Some of these can be seen on the front picture in the below screen capture.

Sometimes I find that I have to go to these speaker settings, scroll through them and manually set each slider level to full volume (100%).

I've also discovered that every once in a while, the speaker for a particular setting has been muted. (In the diagram below, I've highlighted my muted MIDI.)

When this happens, I simply left-click on the speaker to activate the sound.

Regards,
Noel

Thanks Noel - I have checked Speakers Properties Faders (recall I'm W7/64) while BIAB was "playing" using the MS GS Wavetable. None are muted and all are at a high level. No sound. Opened midi player (VanBasco, outputting to MS GS WT) played and sounded fine.

Interestingly, I don't show a "MIDI Synth" in my fader group playing BIAB or VanBasco. Any clue there???

You should have 2 speakers in the tray. One says speakers and one says Real Tech audio manager.Yours will be different depending on the sound card but should say "audio manager".Right click and choose Volume control. With BIAB open you should see a listing for BIAB along with the BIAB Icon. Now make sure the little speaker at the bottom under the BIAB Icon doesn't have a red circle crossed out. Also in the same menu you chose "vol.Control choose sound manager and make sure that little speaker Icon is not red.

I can't find anything else in BIAB that would affect this.
In device manager try disabling and then re-enabling the sound card.

Hi Silvertones - Rechecked "Volume Control". First, BIAB (and all) not muted. Also, with BIAB playing, I can see "gain" pulsing in the BIAB fader (as reported earlier). But no sound.

I disabled and enabled the Realtek HD Audio driver and the Intel Display Audio drivers (one at a time and both at once). No help.

Also, for the record, reinstalled BIAB form the PGM hard drive. No help.

??

What is selected as your BiaB Midi device and also the Audio output? Both of these will be found in Prefs.

I'm wondering if midimapper or Soundmapper is causing trouble here. If those are selected, select a different device driver (named for the soundcard being used, like wavetable for MIDI and realtak for audio) and see if anything changes.
If not change back .. so we don't cause more problems.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Bob - For MIDI, I have three choices - MS MIDI Mapper, MS GS Wavetable Synth, and Fantom-X (my hardware MIDI synth). The first two produce no sound (But BIAB dutifully adjusts latency, etc.) BIAB play the Fantom MIDI just fine. If I use VST/DXI CoyoteWT, no sound.

For Audio, driver type is MME. Click "Get (audio drivers) from Soundcard..." BIAB selects MS Sound Mapper for both in and out. No sound. Selecting "Speakers (Realtek ...) for out, no sound, MIDI or Audio.

Kelso,

Something else that I'd try ...

Download an audio file and a midi file from the internet.

1. Keep BIAB closed and see if the above two files play ok.

2. Now open BIAB and see if the same files play when BIAB is open.

One other thought that occurs to me is how your computer is turned off. Do you send it to "sleep" or close it down fully? It might be that you need to fully turn off your computer, wait 10 seconds and then turn it back on. (I'm not a fan of "restart" because I've found that sometimes the memory doesn't always clear properly. I always use the the turn off, wait, turn on approach.)

Regards,
Noel

Hello Kelso,

There is a strange problem I have seen, maybe you could try this. You should only do this if you feel comfortable following these steps and making a backup of the registry, etc.

1. Open the Registry Editor (Start menu, and type regedit)

2. Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\LowRegistry\Audio\PolicyConfig

3. Expand PropertyStore. Right-click on PropertyStore and click Find... type bbw.exe. It should find a key that looks SOMETHING LIKE this: ac6eg14e_0

4. With that selected, look in the right-hand pane under that data column and check that it has the path to your Band-in-a-Box application, for example \bb\bbw.exe. You may need to make the Data column wider to see the path.

5. Delete that ONE key, and press F3 to search again. If there is another key under PropertyStore that also contains the same path (e.g. \bb\bbw.exe), delete that one also.

Andrew - you are my hero for the month. Your suggestion worked. I now have midi and audio playing from BIAB, and everything else. (had to delete three entries)

So, given that all was well after installing my music software in my new computer, and then only BIAB stopped output, can you guess what happened to cause this, and why the problem was somehow associated with ie (which I seldom use)?

No matter - thanks for sticking with me on this and coming up with the expert solution that neither I nor anyone else on earth could have provided.

I love PGMusic!

Because Windoze is Windoze, my man.

Just be happy you found a solution -- and be sure to WRITE IT DOWN or print it out and keep the paper in a safe place just in case you need it again later on.
