Hi Josie
Headphones 99% of the time. The other 1%, regular computer speakers from my iMac.
Best of all and hope your day is a nice one

Hi Josie,
When in my little mancave, I always use my nearfield studio monitors, which are home built by yours truly, 8" poly drivers and titanium tweeters with a passive corssover that I designed in an attempt to alleviate crossover phasing problems somewhat.
When using my laptop on the road, I use Altec Lansing BX1220 USB powered speakers.
I very rarely use headphones for listening because I cannot stand what they do to the stereo imaging field (string sections coming from somewhere down around my collarbone, etc.) but there is something else that you must consider about your little survey here:
You are asking a bunch of recordists how they listen.
That is going to give a skewed result as compared to what the greter number of listeners, casual listeners and other types that make up the non-recording segment of humanity. The reality is that our recordings are quite often going to be played or presented on less than the highest quality systems and that is why Mastering by someone who knows the process well can make a big difference in how your musical presentations are heard. A good Mastering Engineer is going to know how to massage your sonic creations such that they sound prety good when played back on all sorts of systems, speaker or earphone, within the limits of what the two extremely different methods offer.
--Mac

I usually use my M-Audio DSM1 monitors. Late at night I may change to Grado RS 2 headphones. Occasionally when I use the laptop I will use Sennheiser HD495 cans.
It is an interesting subject you brought up. After all (what Mac already said) there is a big difference between the purpose of hifi-speakers and studio-monitors. And think of the difference in sound between high-quality hifi-speakers and crappy portable radio/cd-players and/or car stereo's... Your mix has got to hold it's own on all these systems. The better your mix sounds on studio-monitors (yours and the forum-members) the better the mastering engineer can do his mojo.
So it really is good to know who on this forum is listening to your tracks on what kind of speakers.

If it is a song a fellow forum member produced with BIAB I use head phones for a quick listen and if the tune "grabs me" I walk the laptop to my desk and play it back through my Bose stereo radio. For all others just the headphones.
Later,

If it's a quick listen to see what someone is up to, I use headphones on the laptop.
If it's a closer listen, upstairs it goes to the room with the BX8a speakers.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

I use phones and nearfield powered bi-amp speakers about equally. In the evening the 'phones are used more, but in the daytime the speakers are preferred. The speakers are Yamaha MSP5A; 'phones are Sennheiser HD 340 (long discontinued - pity). http://www.yamahaproaudio.com/products/speakers/msp5a/With my elderly ears, the sounds from both are surprisingly similar, so I use them interchangeably. The older Sennheiser headphones are indeed much better than the new ones. You can get the same or higher quality, but you'd have to step up some types (and spend more)
Seems like a lot of companies have lowered their standards over the years (Sennheiser, Marantz, Harman-Kardon etc.) they do still make excellent products, but only in the top range...

When my wife is at home, headphones always. I have 2 that I use: some Sony Earbuds that I actually bought for my iPhone, and Shure SRH240 over the ear. When I am alone, I listen mostly to speakers (Samson StudioDock)

Never on headphones. Only use them to check/clean tracks prior to mixing and in the final stages of a mix. I find it very difficult to mix on cans. I like to to compare the sonic quality of songs published on this forum on my regular near fields (Adam A7 & Sub8) and in my office at work I listen on Adam A3X. Daniel
edit: I do like to listen to music on phones (lying in bed), but not to check out new songs published here. Just to be clear.

I wear Sony Wireless or Apple EarBuds, whether I'm listening to music....or Aljazerra!!
....I'll probably wear "the buds" next year, as I walk done a desolate Florida beach, listening to Tom Waits singing Matilda...while God's Wrath rains down on the studpidity of the human race!! Can't believe this post has gotten 400 hits...well, I might as well join in ....

Thank you everybody who answered! It was very interesting to me. GDaddy, part of those hits are me and probably others checking back to see what people said. I'm glad you joined in. BTW, the article I read, sorry don't remember the link, said that most people listen to music on the internet through headphones. I'm wondering if that will change as more internet connected tvs become common place. This is also a great resource list for anyone looking at speakers to see what others here are using. Some of you guys sure have a nice "man cave" all I have is a woman den. LOL. Thanks again.
