I'm excited by what's possible in Realband... I pulled over the 7-minute big tune I've built in BIAB, along with vocals... all sounds great, but the midi bass wouldn't play at first, because I hadn't initially selected midi output, I went back and selected Microsoft midi mapper, then I could hear it, but out of sync.

So I thought, okay, must be because I selected the midi output after the file was generated, so I closed without saving, re-opened Realband, made sure the Microsoft Midi output was indicated, and then re-opened the BIAB file.

Same problem. Midi bass totally off. Forgive my extreme newbishness, but what am I doing wrong? I've been working in BIAB for over a year, and I think I want to use RB.

RB 2011 with updates, Windows 7 64-bit on an Asus UL30 low-voltage 1.3 ghz processor 500GigHD 4Gigs Ram.

I don't use midi mapper. Try regenerating a new midi bass track on another track in RB. Choose an open track, right click, and generate just the midi bass part. Does that also generate out of sync?

As Sundance said, try to avoid MidiMapper. It is known to have issues. Does your soundcard show up there as a MIDI device, or MS wavetable synth? You might try that one..

Right-clicking and generating as suggested above requires the use of a DXi or VSTi synth though.

Install the free Coyote WT synth that came with the program (it may already be installed - the steps below describe how to use it if so), or even better yet initialize the 30 day free trial of Coyote Forte.

Then you put a check in the 'Reroute all MIDI to DXi synth' box (In the MIDI Devices area), Select the synth from the dropdown box right there, and your processor will generate the sounds using a better sounding DXi SoftSynth. This is a far better way to go versus the windows default soundset anyway.

Thanks so much Sundance and Rharv! I've tried your suggestions, and it's much better. But it still doesn't sound as good as in BIAB. I'll try some more tweaking and return with further questions.

That's because you may be using a different synth in Biab. Check the midi synth options in Biab and make sure it's the same setup in RB. They are two separate programs and have to be set up individually.

As Jazzmammal mentioned, if you are not in 64 bit OS, you may have the VSC DXi being used in BiaB and Coyote in RB or something along those lines.

The VSC DXi doesn't work in 64 bit OS environment, which is why I suggested one of the others, but it may not apply to you if you are in XP 32 bit OS ...

Make sure the midi device and DXi synth being used is the same in both programs, then they should sound VERY much the same.

You also may be using effects in BIAB that you're not in RB. Reverb is on by default in BIAB

Thanks again for all your great suggestions. I was able to fix it with help from PG support, so I figured I'd post here in case anyone else can use it.

They told me to download this free midi driver, Loopbe1 :http://nerds.de/en/download.html, (I believe they said this was needed since I'm on 64-bit win7)

Then to download Asio4all driver http://asio4all.com/

Run and install both, restart computer, in Realband go Options, Preferences, midi tab, midi devices, select Loopbe1, make sure "reroute midi back" box is checked, and Coyote WT selected from the drop-down.

Then go Options Preferences, audio tab, and select ASIO in the audio driver type drop-down (not MME)

Now it seems to work. In case this helps some other RB newb, thanks again folks, any comments on any of this welcome. I imagine there may have been other fixes...

I think you are about to fall into a big pit.I do not see why they are telling you to use a virtual midi cable. I don't need that at all. As far as ASIO goes to me it's the same as Meth.

Silvertones, why is Asio a pit? What Pg support has suggested has resolved the problem, are you suggesting Asio is going to cause me more other problems?

What other route do you suggest?

ASIO can be problematic. I would stick, as I have, to the MME (they are actuallly WDM) drivers and either buy the Coyote Forte DXi or download the free SFZ and use soundfonts for your midi and of course use RTs & RDs.Once I have a MIDI track I like I convert it to audio so that I don't have to deal with both MIDI & Audio. All my songs end up as audio.

I am not well-versed in Coyote Forte DXi or SFZ...I am using the Coyote WT that comes with BIAB 2011...how much better is it? (I am aware I can try the 30-day demo) I had planned on hooking up my Fantom X8 to get better midi sound...would the Coyote Forte DXi and/or SFZ be better, worse, or about the same as the X8? I know they would be more portable! Ha!

But why not try the Forte? You get to use it for 30 days after installation. $40 if you like it; if you don't, then just uninstall it. I like the sounds of the Forte better than the Coyote WT, since the WT is just a DXi implementation of the sounds you get from the Microsoft WaveTable Synth anyway (which gives you MIDI sound, just not very good sound).

Actually, I would prefer that...the Fantom X8 is a wonderful keyboard but it is bulky, and weighs over 100 lbs with the case and stand...and...I play Bass, Trumpet, vocals and some functional keys. I would rather have the best possible midi sounds from a more portable source... What would be the best possible way to get those superior midi sounds in your opinion? The Coyote Forte DXi? or...? Forgive the elementary questions...I don't know much about this area....yet!

I find the Forte DXi to be excellent sounding. I also use SFZ for some particular soundfonts I like. There are a lot of good fonts that are free. Build your arsenal of sounds. Also IKMultimedia has a free "SampleTank" version that has great sounds but is a bit trickier to use.

Thanks guys! I have just downloaded my free trial of Forte DXi and am installing. I will go look at SFZ next...do ForteDXi and SFZ co-exist or run separately?
